Food Fest!

Holiday time is, naturally, a food fest!  I guess we are reverting to our primal ways, or acting as bears do, stocking up for a long winter's nap.  We eat-too much, we drink-too much, we sleep-too much, but we do have a good time.  And since life is short, as we all know too well, eat, drink, nap and be merry! 'Tis the season after all.

Other than huge meals for Thanksgiving, friends and Christmas, I've been cooking just for the three of us:  Pasta fagioli, Chicken noodle soup, Muffaletta sandwich (crusty bread warm from the oven stuffed with prosciutto, hot cappicola, ham, genoa, provolone and smothered in crushed olive salad), Chili with rice, cheese, scallions and sour cream on the side, Chicken cutlets, etc...

I still have on my list:  Borscht with meat and matzoh balls, White bean and spinach soup, Shrimp scampi over linguine, Rack of frenched lamb chops with rosemary and Cioppino with garlic bread.

Tonight, however, I am  not cooking :) and we are going to Glenn and Eileen's for a big "framily" Chinese dinner.  New year's eve we are going out to dinner at Il Poeta with Joe and Denise and Monica and Tom and then we are off to Leslie's for a party!!

Happy and Healthy New Year to you all.

Cronin and Phelan

Last night Michael and I went to Cronin and Phelan for dinner with Lenny.  We had a few beers :) and French onion soup, honey bbq wings and potato skins with bacon and cheddar.  Dinner was:  A burger with blue cheese and fries, a burger with sauteed onions, blue cheese and salad and a roast turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy.  The service was outstanding!

Today Fresh Direct is coming with my Christmas Eve dinner delivery and I will also bake a cheesecake and clean my house.

Can't wait for Santa!

Since December 10, Where Have I Been?

Well, we had our tree delivered (Thanks Joe). We decorated the tree and wrapped gifts for underneath.  We filled our stockings (and those for the cats too). Jesse came home for the holidays! I finished Christmas shopping.  I did more laundry than humanly possible. And then I got sick. I feel better today, Thank heaven, because there's still so much to do and I have no time to feel poorly.

I've made:  chicken cutlets, teriyaki steak, roast rack of pork, chicken soup, orecchiette with chicken sausage and spinach, four cookie sheets of Old Bay wings for the Creutz' annual ornament party.

We went to the Creutz' for their party and it was GREAT fun.  We came home with wonderful new ornaments for our tree and we did it in an honorable style without stealing from anyone (even though that is always done in the spirit of the game). We went to the Shapiros for dinner and to see Michelle in her first stage production of "13."  She has joined a theater group and I am sure we will see more of her on stage in the future.

Christmas Eve, unfortunately, will not be the same with the Wisners who will be in Costa Rica (lucky devils), but The Figliolias will join us and that is great!!  We will have:  Bread, cheeses, olives, red pepper skordalia with fried ravioli for dipping.  Dinner is:  Balsamic chicken with cippoline and fingerling potatoes, string beans,  ziti (with no ricotta-Ian's fav) and Caesar salad. Dessert is:  Cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies.

...and to all a good night...

China White

Saturday night Michael and I met Chris, Margo, Mike and Chrysalis for dinner at China White (http://chinawhiteusa.com/gallery_purchase/img001.html) in Purchase.  Ryan was performing in The Nutcracker later on that evening.

First off, there is valet parking.  Immediately I thought that wasn't necessary, but after dinner when we went to get our car out of the lot, I realized how necessary the valet was.  The restaurant filled up quickly and the lot is small.  From the outside, the restaurant looks like a lovely home, inside it is more Zen-like with white table cloths, muted tones, paper light fixtures over the bar and lighting that got progressively lower during the meal, causing me to state the age-old comment "I feel like Bette Davis in Dark Victory."

Let's discuss the prices for a) a restaurant NOT in New York City b) a Chinese restaurant and c) on a dark quiet road in Westchester:  Egg drop soup $6-very average-gelatinous and mildly flavored; Hot and sour soup $7-more flavorful yet still gelatinous and Won ton everything soup $8-not quite "everything"-just baby bok choy and mushrooms added-actually had more of a Japanese flavor than Chinese.  Vegetable spring rolls $8-greasy; Chinatown roast pork $9-NOT, may I repeat NOT like Chinatown at all.  Roast Pork chow fun $16-REALLY GOOD; Black pepper beef $26-REALLY GOOD; Spicy fried rice $10-Good and a chicken dish I can't remember (because I didn't try it) but everyone liked it.

The service is attentive and nothing to complain about.  The organic red Cabernet was good yet Michael asked for 2 cubes of ice in his McCallen, and it came on the rocks, so their bar skills are not up to par.

We will NOT be going back strictly due to the prices.  $26 for beef and Chinese vegetables, I don't care how good it is, is a ridiculous price.  However, the best part of the evening was seeing Ryan perform in The Nutcracker and that was what the evening was all about!

Deviation from the Norm (and no, I have not been drinking)

Usually I speak about food, mine or others, fresh or prepared, take out or dine in.  But I am going to deviate from the norm (not actually so unusual for me).

It is the "Holiday Season" and/or the "Christmas Season" and for many it is a very stressful and difficult time of the year.  I am sorry so many actually feel that way and I have friends who have expressed just these feelings to me over the years and lately.

I can understand why many feel this way:  Expectations-great and small; rushing; hurrying; smiling; parties; obligations-familial and otherwise; decorating; participating...Also many miss their closest loved ones the most during the holidays.

I, on the other hand, have tried (really hard, for a long time) to make this the happiest time for me and my family and friends.  I have many loved ones who are gone, but I remember them fondly and not with a tear in my eye.  I run and rush and decorate and participate (and cook).  I try to be involved in "holiday" activities like seeing our nephew perform in The Nutcracker, shop for presents only after the stores have been decorated, eat at restaurants that are seasonally ornamented and other such things.

Our Christmas tree is stored at Joe's garage (not Zappa's-haha).  Every year it comes into our house and I can't help but smile.  The ornaments that we hang each year are all memories of past events, times, places and people.  The gifts that are placed underneath are all for our most loved friends and family.  Even the plate of cookies for Santa which we put out every Christmas Eve is a reminder of holidays past when Jesse was little and still believed in the fairy tale.

I still believe, not in Santa of course, but in goodness and friendship and man's humanity towards man.  Although these qualities are not always apparent, I do believe that they exist and I look for them and forward to them.

So now you are asking yourself "What is she on?" and "Can I have some?"  The answers are: Nothing and you already have it.  So, I have deviated not only from my food conversation but from my customary scrappy, rational self.  Surprise! And in closing, remember and believe that...All you need is Love!

Dinner at the Polikoffs

Saturday night December 3rd, we had fifteen (yes, count 'em...15) friends for dinner.

We started with:  Ciao Angelo and Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses-as usual-with balsamic glaze for dipping; olives; pepperdews; soppressata and bread.  We also had a plate of smoked salmon over caper-dill sauce on brown bread-way yummy!  Of course there was red wine, white wine, cocktails, bourbon, beer and scotch (and soda for the under 21 crowd).

Dinner was:  Country Greek salad; string beans with garlic and oil; roasted fingerling potatoes and a ten pound boneless prime rib roast slathered in mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Au Jus on the side of course.

We had a GREAT time. Photos to follow!

Mon Petit Cafe

Friday night Michael, Barbara, Paul and I attended the opening of Maurice Badler Fine Jewelry at 485 Park Avenue.  (www.Badler.com).  The store is lovely!  The lighting shows the gems brilliantly.  And they have a full line of Pandora.  Champagne, finger sandwiches, cheeses, photos, mingling.  Just what an opening should be!

Afterward, we went to dinner at Mon Petit Cafe (http://monpetitcafe.com/) at 801 Lexington Avenue.  We called for a reservation while we were at the opening, and even though we called again to say we'd be a few minutes late, they held our table.  The restaurant is small and cozy, nicely decorated for the season.  They do not rush you and they were very accommodating.  We had French onion soup (more about that later); Croque-Saumon Frais et Fumé avec Emmental -Hot sandwich with fresh and smoked salmon and emmental cheese with house salad; Steak Haché Rossini -Hamburger topped with foie gras mousse with French fries (minus the foie gras mousse and add sauteed onions); Ratatouille-Provincial mixed vegetable stew and Saucisses de Canard au Grand Marnier-Grilled duck and grand marnier sausages with sautéed onions, apples served with a basket of sweet potato fries. Everything was very good.

Conversation of the evening:  Is the waitress really French?  Is the accent real?  Maybe she's French-Canadian?

Additional conversation:  Are they gay? Are they a couple? Did she have plastic surgery? Did her husband leave her for a younger woman?  No one escapes our...curiosity.

So, the onion soup didn't come before the meal, but with it, so Michael sent back the burger, yet when it did arrive, it was warm and flavorful and just as he ordered it.  The bread was a HUGE disappointment-it was cold and spongy yet it looked deceivingly warm and crunchy-bummer.  Also, I ordered a glass of Vin de Pays d’Oc Cabernet Sauvignon, Jean de Roze 2009 and it was very smooth with no tannins (I am not sure it really was a Cabernet).  The profiteroles for dessert were yummy. And the company, once again, was what made the evening!

Agora

Last night I went with Barbara, Dina and Dina's mom, Nora to Agora on Austin Street.  I have been there a few times before, and other than the whole branzino which was dry and terribly thin (had it on a previous visit) everything was great!

The grilled octopus is the best I've ever had.  Their Horiatiki salad is good, plate of different spreads are all yummy and comes with warm pita.  The shrimp saganaki is flavorful, but could possibly use a touch more feta, and we also shared a dinner portion of Mousakka.  Dessert was honey balls (vaguely resembling the taste of zeppoles).  And don't forget our bottle of Greek red wine.

We spent the evening catching up on each other's children (all our boys have known each other since kindergarten-and so have we).  It was great to see Nora, it's been a long time and I am glad she is out and about after falling during a trip to Jamaica.

Thanks for another night with good company and good food!

Cioppino for Two, then Three More

Last night I made Cioppino:  1 Doz. Clams; Calamari rings and shrimp added to:  Crushed tomatoes, onions, garlic, green peppers, jalapeno peppers (not so much), thyme, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and white wine.  Cooked the sauce/soup for a few hours then added the seafood for about 20 minutes till the clams opened.  I made garlic bread with my boiled-in-olive oil-garlic and we dipped and slurped.

Then we called the Wisners who had not eaten yet and they came up and finished the pot!  It was a great Tuesday evening!

Dee's and Denise's

Saturday night Michael, Jesse and I went to Dee's.  Yum!  We shared a Caesar salad and a Margherita pizza, then we ordered another Margherita Pizza because it was so good.  Jesse had Argentine skirt steak with mashed potatoes (the steak was perfect) and Michael had a rosemary turkey burger with carmelized onions and no bun :)  A few margaritas (not the pizza kind) and a few glasses of chianti rounded out the evening!

Monday night Michael and I were treated to dinner at Joe and Denise's.  We had broccoli rabe and sausage and hummus and pita to start with, then the main event:  Mushroom Lasagna with bechamel and cheeses.  It was great!! And so was the company!!

Thanksgiving

Our annual family Thanksgiving dinner was last night at our house.  Chris, Margo, Mike, Ryan and Chrysalis joined us.

We started with:  Seared scallops with lemon artichoke pesto; asparagus wrapped with prosciutto and hollandaise sauce to dip; ciao angelo and parmigiano reggiano cheese with balsamic glaze; rosemary-salt sourdough bread; tomato garlic dipping sauce; pepperdews and olives; beer, wine and lemon-mint-vodka cocktails.

Dinner was:  Corn chowder; sweet potatoes, stuffing (from Chris); sauteed rainbow chard with garlic (Chrysalis made); whole berry cranberry sauce; pickled beets; cavatelli with pink sauce; and of course a brined-butter and herb under the skin-roasted turkey.

Dessert was:  Short bread cookies; carrot cake and strawberries with fresh whipped cream and coffee.

Some of us slept through dessert, on the couch, on an available bed, in a chair...And some of us woke up at 3am and started all over again...and some of us cleaned up and went to bed at 10pm.

Glad we are such an agreeable family and no one minds what the others do (or don't do).  We love you all!

Caffee Linda and More

Last night I went with Barbara and her daughter Jackie to the holiday shops at Bryant Park.  They come every year around this time, but this year they are here early from October 15 to January 8.  We walk the park and shop and eat and talk and watch the skaters.

Then we walked to Grand Central because their Holiday Boutique is open as well.  This has become a yearly event for us, maybe 3 or 4 years now.

Afterwards we walked around and found a very cute place to eat, Caffe Linda (http://www.yelp.com/biz/caffe-linda-new-york).  We had:  Minestrone soup, Insalata Linda-mozzarella, avocado, hearts of palm, tomato & white beans and Pappardelle with a rabbit ragu (not me of course, but Barbara).  A few glasses of Chianti and a shared dessert of Tartufo Al Cioccolato.  Yum!

But best of all was the company!

Triangolo Pizza, Wing Stop, Cronin & Phelan and Dani's

We have had a busy weekend.

Friday night we got haircuts then went to Greenpoint and had a quick slice of pizza before meeting Jill and Lenny for their friends gallery opening.  We went to Triangolo Pizza on Manhattan Avenue.  We each had a Sicilian slice then shared a regular slice.  Both were really good!

We left there and met Jill and Lenny at Greenpoint Gallery on McGuiness Boulevard.  Up one flight of metal stairs to a room with long curtains, couched areas, live music and not so fabulous art :(  Jill's friend is Robbii and his art is sculptures in wood and reclaimed metal along with the stray doorknob.  The paintings, which were not his, were of birds and were hung on the walls with thumb tacks, yet still had price tags next to them of $1200.  Please!  There were real-stuffed-spray painted birds hanging from wire as well. Anyhoo...

We left there and drove to LIC Bar, you guessed it, in Long Island City.  We had a few beers and a glass of wine then went home to go to sleep.  Seemed like a long day.

Saturday night, I was in the mood for Shepherd's Pie and after reading several scary reviews for Donovan's and Morrison's, we ended up back at Cronin and Phelan on Broadway in Astoria.  Their website sucks, the outer building is just a brick wall with a door inset, however, inside is really nice.  Wooden bar, comfy booths and tables, decent menu and good Shepherd's pie.  Michael had a French Onion soup and a chipotle chicken sandwich.

We wandered Steinway Street afterwards, bought a sweater in the Gap and found a cool looking wing joint called Wing Stop (http://www.wingstop.com/).  If you're ever in the mood for wings, I would check this place out.

Tonight we went to Dani's for an early dinner:  Eggplant parm casserole, eggplant parm hero (I only ate a 1/4 of it), salad and we shared a slice of pizza.  Yum!

Tomorrow Barb and I are trying to go to Bryant Park again, but it is supposed to rain, so we'll see.  Jesse is coming home Tuesday !!!! and Wednesday and Thursday are cooking and family days.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Roberta's

Monday night we had leftovers (sauce, macaroni, Brussels sprouts, Greek salad).  Tuesday night I roasted a chicken.  Wednesday night we went to Roberta's (http://www.robertaspizza.com/) with Joe and Denise.  They had given me a gift certificate to Roberta's for my birthday and the inevitable argument over the check ensued regardless :)  We had:  Romaine salad with candied walnuts, pecorino and mint; Squash with pumpkin seed and aged Gouda; The Purple Nurple Pizza (I kid you not) - tomato, mozzarella, ricotta, parmigiano, eggplant and garlic and the Banana Hammock Pizza (still not kidding) - bechamel, mozzarella, parmigiano, pork sausage, banana peppers, garlic, onion and cilantro; and the Special Calzone with pesto, mozzarella, parmigiano, ricotta, prosciutto crudo and roasted red pepper.

EVERYTHING WAS YUMMY! Thanks guys!

Last night I was supposed to go into the city but the weather was so yucky that we canceled and had take out at home:  Eggplant parmigiana hero for me and Caesar salad with grilled chicken for Michael.

Today I am vacuuming, mopping and doing laundry.  Also making mushroom barley soup (golden, with chicken stock, not beef) and later Michael and I have haircuts, then we are meeting Jill and Lenny in Greenpoint at The Greenpoint Gallery (http://thegreenpointgallery.com/).  Their friend has an opening tonight.  Hoping for some drinks afterwards :) then home to a warm, cozy bed and some zzzzzzz's.

Next week is Thanksgiving and of course my order for Fresh Direct delivery has been in for 2 weeks already :).  I have the delivery on Wednesday morning, then prep and bake all day so we can do the turkey right on Thursday.

Most importantly though, is that Jesse is coming home Tuesday night!

Friends For Dinner

Last night we had some of our closest friends over for dinner.  Glenn, Eileen, Emily and Sarah and Lenny, Jill and Brett.

We had:  Olives, cheese, bread, roasted tomatoes, crab cakes with garlic aioli, red wine, white wine and vodka-lemon-mint cocktails.  Dinner was:  A big pot of gravy with meatballs, pork and sweet sausage, Rigatoni, country Greek salad, garlic bread and roasted Brussels sprouts with pancetta, onion and garlic.  Dessert was:  Apple cobbler, rugalech and Eileen's sweet and salty cookie.

We had a really good time.  We laughed and told stories and sat at the table for a long time.  Thanks guys! We love you!

Not Cooking

Today is Thursday and I am not cooking, because I don't feel like it, that's why.

Monday night Michael was at 5 Burro with Glenn and Lenny.  I have no idea what I ate at home :)

Tuesday night I made sauce with braciole and penne.

Wednesday night I made chicken cutlets with panko and burned broccoli.

And here we are, it's Thursday and I am not cooking.  I am not cooking Friday night either, also because I don't feel like it. However, I will be making rugalech for Saturday night.

Saturday night The Wisners and the Creutz' are coming for dinner.  I am cooking :) and I am making:  crab cakes with garlic aioli, then a big pot of sauce (gravy) with pork, sweet sausage and meatballs; rigatoni; homemade garlic bread with my olive oil boiled garlic; broccoli and cauliflower with garlic and oil and country Greek salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, feta, oregano, olive oil and red wine vinegar). Dessert will be rugalech and apple cobbler.

Sunday, you guessed it, I am not cooking.  Michael is going to the Jets game with Steve and I will relax :)

Have a nice weekend!

Contemplating

I was at a funeral yesterday and I was listening to all the loved ones who spoke.  I paid careful attention to her children because she was a mom and I wondered how they would eulogize her.  Her daughters were eloquent and gracious and VERY sad.  It got me thinking what would be said about me at my funeral.

No religious gobbly-de-gook please.  I'd rather be cremated and taken home than buried.  Please play Gimme Shelter by the Stones and There Comes A Time by Neil Young. (In case anyone remembers).

So...I wondered who would speak and what they would say.  I wondered if my cooking would be mentioned, or my restaurant reviews or my holiday dinners. I wondered how I would be remembered.  Not morbidly, just curiously.

hmmmmmm...

Miranda and Fortunato Brothers

An evening in Brooklyn with friends.  What could be better?

Michael and I went with Jill and Lenny to Miranda (http://www.mirandarestaurant.com/).  The food is a mix of Latin and Italian.  The decor is warm and woody.  The wine list is plentiful.  The fresh bread served tableside continuously is wonderful, with choices of foccacia, whole wheat and Tuscan.  The service is good, no rushing, no screw-ups.  We had called for a same-day reservation and they were able to accommodate us to within a half hour of our preferred time.  The ONLY draw back:  Their sangria was grosser than gross with mushy fruit, pits and some funky spice I could not place.  Michael and I sent ours back and ordered a bottle of organic red Tempranillo instead.

For appetizers we shared:  Market Green salad with spiced beets, ricotta salata, marinated mushrooms in a sherry vinaigrette; Grilled baby octopus salad with arugula, avocado, cucumber, pickled shallots and jalapenos; and a three cheese plate - Garrotxa which is a goat's milk cheese from Spain, Salva Cremasco  which is a cow's milk cheese from Italy and Pecorino Ginepro which is a sheep's milk cheese from Italy.  The plate comes with fig spread. Way yummy all around.

For dinner Jill had Medialuna - wild mushroom and ricotta half moons with white truffle oil (great).  Lenny had Pappardelle with a ragu of mole-braised leg of lamb and parmigiano reggiano (yummy).  Michael had Grilled Churrasco - Angus skirt steak with roasted carrots and fingerling potatoes with shallots and chimmichurri (very good).  I had Arancini -  which were supposed to be small rice balls with chorizo and spinach (yucky and no flavor). But the tomato fonduta (thick sauce) that they came on was really good.

We decided to have dessert at Fortunato Brothers on Manhattan Avenue.  We parked, got a table for four and had a cat jump up on Michael's lap :) It was great.  Cappucino, espresso, cannolis, lobster tails and chocolate gelato.  Need I say more?!

Since Monday

Not a very original title for me, I know, but it still stands.

Monday night I decided on a new way to eat our veggies, not that we have a problem eating them the old way:  Garlic and oil on everything.  I felt that since the season has certainly changed to Fall that I would embark on a soup mission.  Soup is good in the Fall and the Fall is a good time for soup.  Win-Win.

This week I made Brussels Sprouts soup (would have worked even better with bacon-but what doesn't).  I made Gumbo (with roux and okra).  I made Broccoli and Cheddar soup (next time I will use extra sharp cheddar). I made Lentil soup (Trader Joe's has lentils already cooked and vacuumed sealed).

I have future plans for Borscht with matzoh balls (love those beets), Cabbage soup, Mushroom Barley and Cioppino (crock pot-I am thinking).

And, of course, our Thanksgiving standard and most yummy soup, Corn Chowder.

Warms me just thinking about it all...

Since Wednesday

Friday night we went to Joe and Denise's for dinner. As usual, it was all good!

We had appetizers:  olives, marinated mushrooms, bocconcini, provolone and parmigiano-reggiano, artichoke hearts, white beans, bread, finger sandwiches of salmon, dill sauce and capers on pumpernickel bread, and of course, wine and scotch.

Dinner was broccoli rabe, farro with shrimp (delicious) and i am totally at a loss for anything else :)

There was a fire in the fireplace and Grateful Dead on the Ipod and good friends chatting. What else is there?

Saturday night, and this may sound redundant, we went to Glenn and Eileen's where Steve and Lori met us also.  We brought Iavarone goodies:  olives, bocconcini, mushrooms, artichokes, white beans (sound familiar...we took Denise's leftovers), and also brought:  soppressatta, ciao angelo and Brussels sprouts.

Eileen and Glenn brought in pots of clams and meatballs and garlic bread from Maroni's in Northport! They made lasagna and salad also.  Wine and scotch (really), coffee and dessert, a fire in the fireplace and more good friends!

Sunday night Michael and I ordered in Caesar salad with chicken, mixed salad and baked ziti from D'Angelo's.

Tonight I am making cream of Brussels sprouts soup and baked chicken breasts with olives, sundried tomatoes and jalapenos.

Plans for the week, or next week or whenever include:  Lentil soup, Cioppino and Cream of broccoli and cheddar soup (I am soupy in the winter) and since the snow came early....

This Week

So far this week I've made panko crusted chicken breasts with old bay seasoning.  On the side was cauliflower with garlic, oil, red pepper flake and bread crumbs.  Last night was Farfalle with spinach, garlic and oil.  Tonight is chicken soup (I've been making that all day) and chicken salad (for Michael, not me).
Tomorrow is a no-cook evening. Michael has a meeting at little league and Friday night we are going out with Joe and Denise.  Saturday night we'll be at Glenn and Eileen's with Steve and Lori.  We are bringing goodies from Iavarone (and wine, of course) and I am sure Eileen will make a yummy dinner.  Great food and great friends. What else is there? xo

Brine! And so much More!

I have recently discovered the goodness of brining.  http://www.howtocookmeat.com/briningmeat.htm is a great site to learn not just about brining but how to cook all sorts of meats.  Clear instructions and quantities.

I brined pork chops that Michael said were the best pork chops I have ever made :) 2 C chicken stock, ¼ C kosher salt, ¼ C brown cane sugar, ½ tsp black peppercorns, 2 bay leaves, ½ Tbsp apple cider vinegar, 2 C ice water is the basic recipe.  I let them sit turning once for about 6 hours in the fridge.  Then I broiled them to almost complete the cooking, then I added balsamic vinegar to make a glaze and seared them in a very hot pan.  Maybe a bit labor intensive, but obviously worth it.

Denise and Joe and Tom and Monica were here for dinner last Friday night and I brined Turkey tenderloins for about 4 hours, turning once, covering them in brown mustard, then with strips of black pepper bacon, then roasting them in the oven with fingerling potatoes, pearl onions and whole garlic cloves.  They remained really moist.  I served them with mesclun salad with thinly sliced red onion and crumbled French Feta cheese with garlic vinegar and olive oil.  Also, Brussels sprouts sauteed with pancetta and garlic.  Monica brought a yummy dessert of raspberry whipped cream in a chocolate cookie crumb crust.

Saturday night Michael and I went to a BBQ at the little league fields.  Peggy made great chili, Carl was the pit master grilling hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage.  It was a fun night under the stars!

Sunday afternoon Michael and I went into the city with Brett and Lenny to meet Jill after the Avon Breast Cancer Walk.  She is a ten year survivor this year!!!!!!!!!!  We also met her sister Karen and their cousins Vince and Patty.  We all went to Dinosaur BBQ for a yummy dinner:  Hot wings with garlic chipotle sauce, fried green tomatoes (which were $8.95 for 5 slices-WAY too pricey, but good. However, I will not order them again on principle), chicken, ribs, brisket, portobello, corn bread, collard greens, rice, baked beans, a few beers and cosmos and we were stuffed and happy!

This past week I made borscht with meat and matzoh balls.  Borscht, if you like beets, and I do, is so yummy.  My grandmother and mother used to make it for holidays, but I make it just because.  I also made turkey chili with my homemade adobo spice.

Thursday night, Jennie and I took Barbara out for her birthday to Barosa.  We shared a few glasses of wine and a chopped salad.  I had shrimp parmigiana with spaghetti (it's be sooo long since I had that).  Jennie had sausage and broccoli rabe (her favorite) and Barbara had linguine carbonara that was fantastic.  We shared a creme brulee for dessert with no singing of Happy Birthday and it was a great evening with friends!

Last night, Michael and I went to Ariana's Sweet 16 at Larkfield Manor.  The DJ was fun, everyone was dancing, all night (my feet are crippled).  There was all sorts of food on the buffet and all sorts of drinks at the bar.  We got home at 1am.  Way past my bedtime, but we had so much fun with our friends.

Tonight we are going to Glenn and Eileen's for Sarah's 17th birthday party.  Eileen is making a big pot of turkey chili with all the fixings and I know we will have a great time with our friends!  We are very lucky to have such a wonderful "framily."

I will try to write more often, I have no idea where I've been lately.  xo

Verso

Last night I went with Barbara, Paul, Jackie and Kenny to see Katie play at the Alphabet Lounge.  She plays guitar and sings her original songs, folk style.  Always nice to see her play!

Afterwards we went to dinner nearby at Verso (http://www.versonyc.com/index.html).  They have outside tables, but it was a bit cool, so we sat inside.  Our party grew to 8 people and they were very accommodating in adding tables for us.  The inside is decorated with warm wood, faux tin ceiling and candle light.  The bar area is very nice.  We shared everything:  Insalata Arugula with roasted pear, caramelized walnuts, shaved pecorino and lemon vinaigrette dressing; Insalata Misto with mixed greens and olives; Penne Melanzane with fresh mozzarella and roasted eggplant; Pappardelle Anitra with duck ragu, anise star and goat cheese; Stuffed squid with ricotta cheese in a light tomato sauce.  A few glasses of Montepulciano and all was very good. If you find yourself in alphabet city, definitely drop in.

PS:  Just for Paul, there was the small matter of the chipped bread plate :) oh, and they were out of Caesar salad.

In Ithaca Again and the Food is Great!

Not thought of, I am sure, as the culinary capital of Upstate/Central/Western New York, Ithaca has some really great restaurants.

Friday night we went to Taste of Thai Express on South Meadow Street (www.tasteofthaiexpress.com).  Our waiter was terrific!  We had Tom Kha and Tom Yum soups-both very good.  We had Pad See Ew, Spicy Rad Nah, Panang Curry, Green Curry and Red Curry.  Dessert was Black sweet sticky rice and coconut custard.  A couple of Thai iced teas and iced coffees and a lot of water :)

Saturday night took the cake however.  We went to Mercato (http://www.mercatobarandkitchen.com/).  Our waitress was Danya and she was superb!  We shared everything:  South Side Cocktail: Plymouth Gin, lemon juice and mint; Sparkling Blue Moon cocktail: LIV Vodka, Creme de Violette, Prosecco and lime juice; a bottle of Montepulciano, Silvano Strologo, "Julius," Marche, 2007 and lots of water.  Appetizers were:  Caponata & Goat Cheese Crostini; Clams Casino; Arugula, Fennel and Goat Cheese salad.  Dinner was:  Spinach Gnocchi, Ricotta Salata with Oven roasted tomato sauce; Fettuccine with Clam Sauce; Eggplant & Goat Cheese Agnolotti with Tomato coulis; Pan Seared Sea Scallops over Fava beans, sweet corn, herb scallop broth with shoe-string fries; and Pan Roasted Pork Chop with Grilled peaches and fingerling potatoes.

The scallops were the best any of us had ever.  The pork chop was phenomenal.  We added sauteed rainbow chard to the table and then had dessert:  Vanilla Panna Cotta with Strawberry-rhubarb jus; Biscotti -Almond, anise, mocha and mosaic; Blood orange sorbet; Affogato-Espresso with vanilla ice cream and Seasonal Fruit Crostata with Asian pears.  The Affogato was heavenly!

I cannot say enough about Mercato.  The prices were high, but worth it.  Maybe special occasion visits, more than everyday eating though.

Had a great time with our family and Jesse!

Cobblestone and Sato

Tuesday night Michael and I took a ride up to SUNY Purchase to visit Emily and Ryan.  Em needed help with her wireless connection and then we took them out to dinner at The Cobblestone, our usual Purchase haunt.  It is a bar/restaurant with good food.  We had Bocconcini Balls-Fried mozzarella balls with marinara sauce; Buffalo Chicken wrap; French Onion soup; Caesar salad with grilled chicken; pulled pork sandwich; taco salad and a Reuben sandwich.  It was a nice visit with the kiddies!

Wednesday night, Barbara and Jennie took me out for my birthday.  We went to Sato, on Queens Boulevard, one of our favorite Japanese restaurants.  We shared:  Sauteed mushrooms (various Japanese and white mushrooms-very good) and Seared tuna with miso-lime sauce (also very good). Barb had chicken teryaki, Jen and I had almost the same thing:  Soft shelled crab rolls (mine with mayo, hers without); salmon sashimi and tobiko sushi and a salmon skin hand roll.  A few tall bottles of hot sake and dessert and we had a great evening. Thanks Ladies!

The Birthday Weekend

In our home it always seems that birthdays do not last one day, a mere 24 hours, or even a part thereof; they last for an entire weekend.  I believe this happens for several reasons:  (1) We have so many friends that we can't spend time with all of them at once, so we stretch it out to see them all (2) We like to keep giving to the ones we love so they know how special they are (in case they've forgotten) and (3) Why not celebrate happy times as much as possible because the sad times creep in too often.

This past weekend was my 48th birthday weekend:

Friday night September 16th Michael and I invited Joe and Denise, Jill and Lenny and Steve and Lori to meet us at Brooklyn Bowl (http://www.brooklynbowl.com/).  It is THE coolest bowling alley ever, with bars and low lights and blaring rock music, and bands and really good food.  We shared:  Rock and Roll fries with gravy, Cajun spice, provolone and cheddar cheese on top; Fried calamari with lemon and cayenne mayo and chillies; three French bread pizzas-Classic with tomato, mozzarella and basil; Greek with tomato, red onion, Feta, olives and iceberg lettuce; and Theresa with butternut squash, mushrooms and roasted garlic. We also had:  A mixture of dark and white meat fried chicken (for which they are famous) and two types of mac and cheese: Smoked chicken and peas and artichokes and black olives.  All the food was really good, but (and you are not going to believe that I am saying this, but, all a bit too salty).  I know, salt is one of my food groups, but if I thought is was salty, it was way too salty for most.  In any case, as I continually digress, we had a great time and it was a great birthday celebration for me!

Saturday, September 17th (which is my actual birthday) Michael and I ordered breakfast from Tower Diner.  I had Eggs Florentine (think Benedict with spinach instead of ham) and Michael had an egg white omelet with onions, peppers and ham. Yum!  Then I went back to sleep (because napping is my very favorite thing to do).  Later in the afternoon we stopped at Cheese of the World on Austin Street to pick up 1/2 a pound of Parmiggiano Reggiano and 1/2 a pound of Ciao Angelo (THE best aged Gouda) to bring to Glenn and Eileen's.  They hosted a  birthday dinner for me and Leslie (her b-day is the 16th).  Good food, good friends! We had:  Cheese (no kidding) and pizza from Emilio's (my favorite) for appetizers.  Then Glenn grilled fish just for me that he had caught previously in the day and everyone else had lamb marinated in garlic and lemon.  Roasted potatoes, vegetables and salad rounded out the meal.  Everyone sang Happy Birthday and we blew out the candles!

Sunday, September 18th, I did a load of white laundry (do not think for one moment that Birthday weekends absolve me from cleaning), then took a nap (really, you say).  Later that evening, Michael and I went to El Quijote on 23rd Street for the obligatory:  Garlic soup, salad, lobster and arroz con pollo.  This time we added cafe con leche, espresso on ice and flan.  We even got a parking space RIGHT IN FRONT.  Holy Shit! Great dinner!

But wait, there's more:  Wednesday night, September 21st, Barbara and Jennie are taking me out to dinner for my birthday. So the weekend has meandered into the week.  Who is luckier than I?

Dee's

After our haircuts on Wednesday night Michael and I went to Dee's on Metropolitan Avenue.  We went to 5 Burro on Austin Street first, but I have to say it's the first time I've been treated rudely there. Marla needs to have a customer service meeting with her hostess.

Anyway, we left there and went directly to Dee's because even though it's always busy, we can always get a table with no wait.  We've even had a table and chairs brought out from a back room and set up for us when there were no tables available!  How's that for customer service?!

We shared:  Fall Mediterranean White Bean, & Vegetable Stew with Shrimp and Chorizo Sausage as an appetizer and then I had Rigatoni & Grilled Eggplant Rigatoni - Grilled Eggplant - DEE'S Marinara - Ricotta Cheese and Michael had a Rosemary Turkey Burger - Dee's Chipotle Sauce - Carmelized onions - Grilled Zucchini.  A glass of Chianti and a Meyer's rum and Diet Coke and we were very happy, and tired.  We went home and I fell asleep around 9pm...

Pangea

Barbara and I continued on our tour of New York neighborhoods with a visit to the East Village last night.
We wandered for more than an hour oogling restaurant after restaurant.  Who knew there were so many to choose from?  The weather was great so outdoor seating was available almost everywhere, and if not, the front doors/windows were wide open.  We originally stopped into a restaurant with cajun food and a rustic woodsy decor.  The back garden was open but for a private party, the booths are "for four" and since there were no tables available up front, the waitress just shrugged her shoulders.  Obviously, we left.  I haven't heard that a table is "for four" in a million years.  Any, and I mean ANY restaurant I've been to in the past ten years has seated our party of 2, 3, 4, whatever at whichever table we liked.  If I could only remember the name of the place i would tell you to BAN IT! (It's located between Cacio e Pepe and Shima).  PS:  After some googling I believe the name of the nasty waitress restaurant is Ninth Ward (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/2010/06/ninth_ward_will.php).

Anyway,  our second choice was Pangea (178 2nd Avenue, between 11th and 12th), which was two doors down.  Their outdoor seating was white plastic tables which were truly uninviting, but inside was wonderful with banquets and small wooden tables with candles.  They have a beautiful wood bar with lovely fabric chairs.  The waiter greeted us at the door with a big smile and were were immediately taken to a table in a corner of the banquet so that neither of us would sit on a wood chair.  It was exactly where we would have chosen to sit, and we let the waiter know how nice it was of him.  We ordered:  1/2 carafe of house Montepulciano for $15 (that gave us 4 glasses for the price of 2).  We shared:  Mesclun salad with beets and goat cheese; shrimp with white beans and bruschetta.  The shrimp was warm, which was a good surprise and the tomatoes on the bruschetta were warm as well.  The goat cheese was good and we were very happy.  The waiter continued to be friendly and even topped off our wine glasses with a bit more from their large bottle.

Would we run back, no, because there are so many other places we'd like to try, however, considering the treatment next door, our experience at Pangea was all the more special.

Sanford's

Sanford's (http://www.sanfordsnyc.com/) was a great find! I can't remember exactly when I found it or why or where, but I like it every time we go back.  We've been here before with Jill and Lenny, Joe and Denise and Tom and Monica.  Good service, good food, ambiance, even street parking!

Last night we went with Dina and Dmitry.  We shared:  Tellowfin Tuna Tartare-sesame soy marinade, house guacamole and cucumber wasabi aioli; Calamari Arrabiata-Fried calamari, cherry peppers, plum tomatoes in a sweet and spicy sauce; Crab cakes with organic greens and pesto aioli; Lobster Spring rolls with horseradish dipping sauce; Apple Tricolore Salad with fried goat cheese, organic greens, fire roasted peppers, grilled apples with balsamic vinaigrette. Michael had a British Turkey burger-Applewood smoked bacon, Swiss cheese and caramelized onions on a jumbo English muffin.  Dmitry had the BBQ Pulled pork sandwich-pulled Berkshire pork voted #1 best sandwich in NYC by seamless web customers (whatever that means).  We shared a bottle of Substance Cabernet Franc from Washington State, then Dina and I also had a glass of Château Moulin de la Roquille which we liked a lot and had a great scent of vanilla.  For dessert we shared the Granny Caramel Apple Pie with vanilla ice cream.  Michael had a double iced decaf espresso and Dmitry had an iced cafe latte.

We had a lot of fun and it was great to spend time with our friends!

Vincent's Clam Bar

The one on Old Country Road, NOT to be confused with the one in Little Italy, which, although being the original, is gross.

Michael and I went to Vincent's (http://vincentsclambar.com/) Monday night for dinner.  Holy crap was it crowded, but they managed to have a table for two in about 15 minutes.  We shared baked clams oreganata (which are not anywhere near the quality of Don Peppe or Carmine's) but they weren't bad either; calamari arrabiata (with cherry peppers, yum); a grandma pizza (their's is personal sized but enough for two).  I also had an espresso cup of their lobster bisque which is really good and a perfect size, just enough. And Michael had a bowl of what The Shack in Centerport calls "Long Island" Chowder which is a mixture of New England and Manhattan clam chowders.  That's really good too. Not too creamy-potatoey and not too tomatoey.

This week at home I've made chicken soup (Michael is a bit under the weather) and today I am making wedding soup-because it's become my favorite and I want to eat it everyday.

Friday night we are having dinner with Dina and Dmitry at Sanford's in Astoria and Sunday we are closing the cabana for the season. Boo Hoo!

Marianella's Taqueria

Last night after Michael's championship game (which they won) we went to Marianella's Taqueria (http://marianellas.com/) on Continental Avenue.  They have a nice bar area, the bartender and the counter persons are very nice and accommodating.  There is no table service and the food is average.  We had:  A grilled chicken salad with no shell, nachos supreme with no ground beef and a cheese quesadilla with guacamole and jalapenos.  Michael rode his bike home, while I walked along the sidewalk.

Hope to BBQ at the beach on Sunday!

Oktoberfest

Last night after Michael's game we walked over to Manor Oktoberfest with Lenny and Steve, and were later joined by Jill, Evan and Rick.  We had beer and shared a Super Sampler Platter: A generous portion of pierogies, potato pancakes, onion rings, hot wings and mozzarella sticks.  The onion rings were great. Everything was fried. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Later, I had a turkey club and Michael and Lenny shared a burger. I walked home! I needed the exercise.

Holy Crap It's Been a Long Time!

Sorry.

  • So....since August 16th...I went to visit my brother and he and his girlfriend made lobster on the grill. It was yummy!
  • We went to see Ryan in his summer intensive Joffrey performance.  He was fabulous!  Then we went to Katz' Deli on the lower east side for pastrami, corned beef, pickles, Dr.Brown's soda and heartburn.  But it was worth it!
  • We went to a party for our friend Leslie's nephew who is going into the Marines.  I got sick with a throat thing and went on antibiotics for a week.  That's always fun.
  • We packed up Jesse and drove to Ithaca to stay with Margo before we moved him in...which was delayed a day because his landlord is a nut.  The place was dirty! I cleaned! Michael hung shades, curtains, put in door and window locks.  That was a fun day!
  • Michael left Cortland on Wednesday night and Jesse and I went out to dinner with Mike and Margo in Ithaca at Just a Taste (http://www.just-a-taste.com/).  Ryan was working as a bus boy.  We had:  Warm Brie with Melon and Crostini; Deep Fried Russet Potato Wedges with Chipotle Aioli; White and Portabella Mushrooms Sautéed with Garlic and Thyme (two orders!!), Garlic Braised Greens with Walnuts, Tomatoes, Sherry Vinegar and Point Reyes Blue Cheese; Clams Steamed in White Wine with Lemon, Onion, Tomatoes, Garlic and Bay leaf; Deep Fried Salt Cod Fritters with Garlic Aioli and Mixed Greens; Lamb with tomato and chick peas in curry; Warm Chocolate Soufflé with Chocolate Ganache, Whipped Cream and White Chocolate Shavings. I had a flight of Spanish wines.  EVERYTHING was great! Wish the place was closer!
  •  Ryan and I drove down on Friday because hurricane Irene was coming.  Michael picked me up from Purchase.
  • Saturday I made lasagna and Lenny and Brett came for dinner. Garlic bread was really good too!
And here we are, back on schedule...cooking, cleaning, shopping, cleaning, laundry, cleaning, laundry...etc...just like that :)

XO!

D.U.M.B.O.

Barbara and I were exploring D.U.M.B.O. (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) the other day.  We drove in, found a metered spot on the street and started walking around.  There are restaurants, bars and shops.  No celebrity sightings though.  We especially loved the park by the water.  The views of Manhattan are incredible both during the day and at night.

We ate at Water Street (http://www.waterstreetrestaurant.com/).  First of all, they have the coolest bathroom we'd ever been in.  It is circular, single occupancy, seems to be built inside a metal container of some kind.  There are paintings on the walls to seem as if you are in an old library at someones home.  There is even a fire place painted on the wall and a small iron grate was placed in front of it.  The floor is tiled black and white.  The rest of the restaurant is very nice also :)  Dark wood, flowers on the tables.  We shared Coconut Kitty Fingers: Battered Catfish Strips Deep Fried with Orange Citrus Marmalade.  Barbara had: Hickory Spice Slow-Cooked Rack of Ribs with Cinnamon dusted Sweet Potato Fries and Collard Greens.  I had:  Down & Dirty in the Delta Homemade Crab Cakes - Chef Reggie’s special. Topped with Remoulade, served over Dirty Rice and Collard Greens.  Everything was really good.  The catfish fingers could have had more flavor but the marmalade was great.  A couple of Blue Moons and a slice of Red Velvet cake that actually had its chocolate flavor and all was well.

After dinner we walked back to the park and sat and took in the magnificent views of Manhattan, watched the kids play in the water, the tourists take photos and I even stepped into the water.

Barosa with Friends

Michael and I were joined by Joe and Denise and Jill and Lenny for a 50th birthday celebration dinner for Michael at Barosa on Saturday night August 6.

Joe chose good wine for us to share. We also had:  Seafood stuffed avocados, Fried calamari Arrabiata (with yummy cherry peppers) and Barosa chopped salad.  Dinners were:  Sea bass Oreganata; Spinach risotto; Chicken Scarpariello; Rigatoni Barosa (with sausage and broccoli rabe) and Chicken cutlet Milanese (covered in chopped tomatoes and mozzarella chesse). Dessert was my homemade Tiramisu (which was really good-if I do say so myself).  Some cappucino and sambuca and we all had a good time.

Tonight Michael and I with Jesse, Michael's mom Chris and our nephew Ryan are going to El Quijote for...you guessed it...garlic soup, arroz con pollo and lobster.  Wait, I forgot the pitchers of red sangria. Can't forget that :)

And, as usual, we will peruse Eataly afterwards because we are 1) creatures of habit and 2) love that place.

Jesse's 19th birthday is tomorrow! Happy day Jesse!

Fifty Years!

Not me :)

Michael will celebrate his 50th birthday on Sunday August 7th.  Part of our celebration is Family Beach Day on Thursday August 4th at our beach club.   It has become an annual tradition with our oldest friends and we all look forward to it.  This year we will have a shared cake for Michael's 50th, Glenn's 50th, Joe's 49th and Jesse's 19th!  The weather does not look particularly fabulous, but rain is NOT in the forecast so that's a huge plus.  We share drinks, laughs, dinner from Mother Kelly's and a special day with great friends.

In addition, Saturday night we are going to Barosa to celebrate with Jill and Lenny and Joe and Denise.  I am making Tiramisu to bring along for a special treat!

We couldn't seem to get our act together to have one big party with all of our friends together.  Maybe, when our terrace is finally back to us, we will have a Polikoff Margarita party, like we used to do.

I made Jill's Grandma's Wedding Soup today.  Maybe a bit too wintery for some, but I love it and would eat it every day if I had a pot of it (and now I do).  Teriyaki steak and broccoli for dinner tonight.  Past dinners have been:  Chicken francese, roasted lemon chicken and take out from Dani's.

Happy Birthday Michael!

Gazpacho and Guacamole

Two wonderful summer foods:

Gazpacho:  One 46 ounce can of V8 Juice, One 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes; Three large seeded, chopped small cucumbers; two stalks celery-peel the strings with peeler then chop small; one red pepper and one green pepper-both seeded and chopped small; 3 scallions-white and green parts chopped small; three garlic cloves chopped small.  Add all ingredients in a large pot or bowl and mix. Then add a dash of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of oregano and 1/2 teaspoon of dill.  You can add chopped jalapeno or hot sauce if you like.  Keep in fridge and serve cold.

Guacamole:  Two ripe avocados-peeled and mashed; two garlic cloves chopped small; cherry tomatoes chopped small; red onion chopped small; one jalapeno seeded and chopped small; salt; fresh lime juice. Mix and enjoy.

Did I mention to chop everything small?  :)

After the Wake

Michael and I went to a wake last night for Michael's friend Benny's mom (she was 93).  After the wake, Michael and I went to eat at Vincent's (http://vincentsclambar.com/) in Carle Place.  PLEASE do not confuse this place with the Vincent's in Little Italy.  The Vincent's downtown may very well be the "original", but their food sucks, their staff sucks and there is no ambiance at all.  However, Vincent's in Carle Place, while claiming to be associated with the "Original" is nothing like it all.

We had:  Calamari Arrabiata with cherry peppers (yum), an espresso cup of lobster bisque (it's small, costs $1.95 and is the perfect size so you don't get filled up on soup, but get to taste how good it is) (yum), a grandma pizza (way yummy) and a grilled chicken with roasted pepper wrap (yum-so Michael said).  Glasses of chianti and red sangria too!  I like the service, always accommodating and pleasant.  The dark wood of the bar and other surroundings make you feel warm and cozy.  Their desserts look fabulous, but we resisted :)

Our 22nd Anniversary

On Saturday for our 22nd Wedding Anniversary, Michael and I along with Jesse and Chrysalis went to El Quijote (one of my absolute favorites).  Not so much for all the food, but for the staff in their tuxedos, the statuary of Don Quijote over the bar, the decor which has not changed since they opened their doors 80 years ago!  The front room is my favorite, but on occasion, I will settle for another room.  I love the bar also (surprise).

We got a spot on the street (which included the obligatory u-turn by Michael on 23rd Street) and didn't even wait for a table.  We ordered:  A pitcher of red sangria (yum), grilled baby squid (yum), garlic soup (yum), prosciutto and melon, Arroz con polo, shrimp with garlic sauce, 1 1/4 pound broiled lobster, lobster meat out of the shell with white garlic sauce on the side (all yummy).  It was just perfect!

Then we walked to Eataly and once again I loved it.  So did the rest of our crew.  Jesse has offered to drive back to the city anytime just to buy the prosciutto (aged 24 months) again!  Chrysalis made a gift bag for her friends and Michael bought me a $15 chocolate bar filled with whole hazelnuts. More perfect!

Once Again, It Is The Company you Keep

I had dinner last night with two of my oldest friends (well, two of my friends that I've had for the longest time, is probably a better way to say it).  Anyway...once again, it is the company you keep that makes the night (or day or whatever), and NOT the restaurant OR the food.

We ate at (aged.) on Austin Street.  Yes, I have been here twice before and was not enthused with their food, but I thought to give it another try.  Even sat at the same table all three times (hmmmm?).  Pam and Randy and I have been friends since I was probably 11 or 12 years old.  Yellowstone Park friends, Halsey Junior High and Forest Hills High School friends.  Randy and I even went to Brockport together (me for 4 years, Randy for 1 semester).  We had FUN, we LAUGHED, we REMINISCED and we totally enjoyed each other's company.  It was a great few hours and we need to do it more often, but NOT at (aged.).

The waiter sucked.  He disappeared for twenty minutes at a time (a few times), brought wrong drinks, didn't tell us that one of our appetizers was unavailable, until he brought over the other 2 we ordered.  Didn't smile, wasn't interested in our table at all, well not until the manager got involved!  Then he was solicitous and smiley, but you know me (and my friends are on the same page) TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE.

We ordered:  Mussels Luciano (Marinated artichokes, roasted tomatoes, gorgonzola & sweet shallots in white wine lemon sauce) VERY GOOD!  Baked Clams (Topped with roasted red pepper, spinach, breadcrumbs and beurre blanc sauce) VERY GOOD, if a bit salty and Keftedes (Zucchini pancakes, feta cheese with capers & sour cream sauce) which was the appetizer they did not have.  We did not replace it with another.

Then we ordered:  Caesar Salad (Romaine lettuce with classic caesar dressing, croutons & shaved parmesan garnished with adriatic white anchovies and marinated cherry tomatoes).  Part of my dinner along with French Onion Soup.  Salad was average, but tomatoes were really good.  Soup was, once again A BOWL OF SALT, cold cheese in a dark brown gravy.  We sent it back and a new one came out hot, but was no better to eat, so i didn't finish it.  Pam wanted the 22 oz. rib eye, but they were out of it (yes, we were in a steak house) so she had the Strip steak instead which came out practically raw, was sent back and the new steak Pam said was GREAT.  Randy had Filet Mignon which he liked a  lot.  On the side we had:  Weak mashed potatoes and pretty good sauteed mushrooms (whole, with garlic).  The manager gave us additional sides of mashed potatoes (still weak)and creamed spinach (YUCKY) for our troubles. Thanks!

They also gave us Creme Brulee as a complimentary dessert and that was DELICIOUS!

Randy tweeted about our experience, Pam put it on Facebook and here I am writing about it.  Please don't waste your time trying this restaurant.  Go out with your friends and have a good time!

Okeanos OR Oceanos

I still can't figure it out.  Saturday night Michael, Jesse and I along with Jill, Lenny and Brett went to Astoria to wait on line for Taverna Kyclades.  The wait time for a table for six was over an hour and a half, but we left our name and cell number in any case.  During holiday weekends the City is so quiet, we thought maybe the wait time would be reasonable.  There were plenty of parking spots however! We walked to the corner and found a restaurant with an interesting menu and an open table for six right at the windows (which are actually huge garage doors that were wide open).

The awning on the restaurant says "Okeanos", the menu says "Oceanos", the website is http://www.oceanorestaurantastoria.com/ (which does not exist on the web, btw). The owner is a kooky old man who also clears tables.  We had:  Fried calamari (average), Grilled octopus (way yummy), Horiatiki salad (Greek salad, no lettuce) (good), mix of spreads-taramasalata, tzatziki, babaganoush, hummus, with warm pita bread (good).  Jill and I shared a carafe of their house red.  It was Greek wine, light and drinkable, nothing to write home about.  Lenny ordered a red snapper but they ran out so he had black sea bass instead. Jesse ordered striped bass and they did not take the bones out (even though the menu states: Chef will remove bones unless otherwise instructed).  This is when the kooky owner tries to explain that most customers prefer the bones in a whole fish.  But why does the menu state otherwise?  He says the customer has to know what they want and order it de-boned.  Anyway.....I had a skewer of scallops (dry), swordfish (white ok, dark yucky) and one (yes, only one) shrimp) along with very limp dandelion greens. Jill and Brett had shrimp and Michael had chicken on a skewer.  They did give us a complimentary dessert of Galaktobouriko (custard in phyllo) very good!

All in all...we would not go back.  The check was $280 with a tip for six people, two of whom had no cocktails and the dessert was free.  Taverna Kyclades would have been much better, however, by the time they called me on my cell to tell me our table was ready...we were just leaving Oceanos.  Oh well.  Astoria is always an adventure and there are many restaurants to choose from.  After all, it is the company you keep that makes the day!

Dee's

Dee's (http://www.deesnyc.com/) is probably our favorite Forest Hills restaurant.  We have NEVER had a bad meal or poor service or a long wait for a table.  The majority of their wait-staff  has been there for years, their brick oven pizza is second to none that I've had in the entire city.

Michael and I popped in for a quick meal on Saturday night before seeing The Lincoln Lawyer at the Cinemart.  We shared a Caesar salad and a roasted red pepper and fresh garlic pizza.  We finished off a bottle of Chianti and then had coffee.  It was a great meal!  We took a walk afterward, then went into the movie.

It was our first date night in quite some time :)

Tonight at Barosa

Barosa (http://www.barosas.com/) is one of our favorite restaurants in Queens.  Vinny the host is always cordial and our waiter Charles is exceptional.  Water glasses refilled, bread basket replenished, dishes cleared appropriately.

Tonight we were there for Jill's 49th birthday.  We went with Jill and Lenny and Steve and Sue.  We shared:   Two Chopped salads - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pimientos, black and green olives, salami and provolone; Calamari Barosa - Calamari in red sauce baked in a bread bowl; Seafood salad in half an avocado; Two carafes of house Montepulciano, Margaritas; Ketel one on ice; Captain Morgan with diet coke.  Dinner was:  Chilean Sea Bass Oreganata; Shrimp Oreganata; Chicken Scarpariello; Veal chop parmigiana; Seafood risotto.

Dessert was:  My homemade Carrot Cake, which everyone liked, even those in the kitchen!  Coffee and Sambuca rounded out the evening.

Happy Birthday Jill!

Carrot Cake for Jilly

Yesterday was Jill's  birthday and I made her a carrot cake, as it is her favorite.  I have made this cake only on Thanksgiving in the past, but it was fun to do on a rainy Thursday.  We will share the cake with Jill, Lenny, Steve and Sue tonight after eating/celebrating at Barosa.  I use the recipe from Silver Palate and it is outstanding (if I do say so myself):

Butter, for greasing the pan
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
3 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1-1⁄2 cups corn oil
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups shelled walnuts, chopped
1-1/2 cups shredded coconut
1-1/3 cups puréed cooked carrots
3/4 cup drained crushed pineapple

Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe follows)

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease two 9-inch springform pans.

2. Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. Add the oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat well. Fold in the walnuts, coconut, carrots, and pineapple.

3. Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Set on the center rack of the oven and bake until the edges have pulled away from the sides and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 50 minutes.

4. Cool on a cake rack for 3 hours. Fill and frost the cake with the cream cheese frosting.

Cream Cheese Frosting

8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Tazzina

Friday night we went out to dinner with Joe and Denise, Jill and Lenny and Tom and Monica.  We went to Tazzina.  It's in Glendale on 88th Street in the same location where La Tavernetta used to be.  It's a small place, cozy really.  Probably will only hold no more than 30 diners. They have tiled the floors and added a wood bar and accents.  The owner/chef, Jason, came out to say hi and see how we were getting along.  He was a very nice guy and the food was really good.  Our waiter, Sandy was on the spot (and good looking too).

We shared appetizers:  Arugula salad with goat cheese, fried calamari with spicy tomato coulis, zucchini blossoms stuffed with cheese and a trio of bruschetta.  Dinner was:  Mahi Mahi, Branzino, Veal Marsala, Chicken under a brick and linguine with shrimp.  Dessert was:   Panna Cotta with fresh berries, Lemon cheesecake and chocolate something (I can't remember) but everything was absolutely delicious. I was not in love with their wine list, however, Joe picked the Louis Martini Cabernet which was fine and Jill and I shared a bottle of their house Montepulciano-which we would not drink again.  Coffee rounded it all out.

I can absolutely recommend this restaurant, but make reservations because they turned away many customers while we were eating because tables are not available.

Saturday night we went to Sato with Jill and Lenny.  Hot white martini (raw fish, not a drink), seaweed salad, shrimp coated in crunchy garlic, chicken teriyaki, salmon sashimi, white tuna sashimi, salmon skin hand roll, sexy roll, dancing eel roll and of course, many bottles of hot sake to share :)

Sunday we spent a wonderful day with friends at Glenn and Eileen's for Father's Day:  Hanging by and in the pool, Kan Jam on the lawn, steak and striped bass on the grill along with baked potatoes, grilled veggies and assorted salad.  A strawberry shortcake cake for dessert. a circle of chairs around the fire pit and our day was complete!

Tonight I just felt like making a pot of sauce (gravy actually).  Michael, Jesse, Glenn and Lenny joined the table and no one went away hungry!

Have a nice week!

Teddy's

Last night Michael and I went to BQE Liquors (http://www.bqewineandliquors.com/) to buy an assortment of Father's Day gifts.  The prices are very good and the selection is extensive.  The owners and staff are knowledgeable about various liquors and wines and they are really helpful.

We are spending this Father's Day at Glenn and Eileen's with the Carbones, the Ochs' and the Creutz'.  There will be five dads lounging around the pool, barbecuing, drinking and having fun!

After buying our gifts we decided to eat at Teddy's (http://www.teddyswilliamsburg.com/).
Lenny first brought us here a few years ago.  It's a great bar with old tiled floors and a tin ceiling.  Invariably they have live music and last night was one of the times.  Michael had a Black and Tan and the BBQ chicken with rice and a side of fresh watermelon.  I had Coors Light (surprise) and two of the specials:  Fried vidalia onion rings and a salad of spinach, beets and goat cheese.  All was yummy.  We brought Jesse home a chicken quesadilla and when I woke up this morning it had disappeared from the fridge :)

Tonight it's dinner with Joe and Denise, Jill and Lenny and Tom and Monica at Tazzina (http://www.timesnewsweekly.com/news/2011-01-27/Local_News/Tazzina_Opens_With_Mediterranean_Flair.html).  You can read a review here and I'll let you know how dinner goes in a day or so.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there and Thank you to the boys who have not become fathers yet!!!

Agora with Friends

Jennie, Barbara and I went to Agora (http://agorataverna.com/about.php) on Austin Street last night.  We went early, about 7pm, because we've noticed that the place usually fills up and we didn't want to wait.  There were open tables last night, but not many, all throughout our meal.  It was a Wednesday night however.

Firstly, there are too many servers and wait staff in that place.  They hover, uninvited, around the table waiting like vultures to scoop away your dirty dishes or empty wine glasses, even when you are not finished using them.

Secondly, similarly to its counterpart in Astoria (Aegean Cove-http://www.aegeancove.com/html/index.html) the fish is not up to par.  I've had fish now in both restaurants and I always expect better.  Last night Jennie and I shared a Branzino with a side of greens.  The fish was thin, nearly tasteless with tiny bones inadvertently left in and the greens were so mushy I envisioned my later life with no teeth.  Barbara had the lamb kebab, which she enjoyed very much.  We all shared the Horiatiki salad (Greek salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, olives and feta cheese) and the grilled octopus which was AMAZING.  It could be the best I've had. Dessert was Milopita (Granny Smith apples, raisins & spices, wrapped in phylo dough served with cinnamon ice cream ) and that was terrific too!  We had a bottle of Greek red wine, certainly palatable, but nothing to write home about at $32 a bottle.

And finally, as with all meals, it's the company you keep that makes the evening! Thanks ladies.

Quick Week

This week I've made chicken chili over broiled polenta; chicken sausage with peppers and onions and chicken cutlets with corn on the cob.  Enough chicken already!  However, in the chicken chili I do use my very own dry Adobo concoction:  Mix all and keep in a tightly lidded glass jar:

1/4 cup sweet paprika
3 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons dried oregano
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon chili powder
1tablespoon garlic powder

It can be used in all Spanish or Mexican dishes, in chili, chicken, beef, soups, stews, etc.

Adios!

Lenny is 50!

Friday night, Jill had a surprise (and I use the term loosely) party for Lenny for his 50th birthday.  Lenny had been bugging her for weeks about having a "surprise" party...who was coming? who to invite? etc...So when Michael, Rick and Evan had Lenny walk to the backroom of the restaurant just to "check it out", he knew what was coming.

The party was at Manor Oktoberfest of Forest Hills (http://www.manoroktoberfest.com/oktoberfest_fh/).  They have a great party room in the back.  It easily accommodated the fifty or so guests there to celebrate Lenny's 50.  They put out bottles (and bottles) of red and white wine, along with two draughts of beer (which everyone enjoyed) except you know I asked for Coors Light in a bottle :)  Italian heros, salads, cheeses, wings, perogies, potato pancakes and really good roast chicken were served for dinner.  Jill got a birthday cake in Bayside made entirely of Whoopie Pies!  It was a great party for Lenny and a great night for all of his friends.  Thanks for sharing your pleasures with us!
