Cooking and not...

So I've been cooking, and not...

Michael and I have been to The Village Grill, Joe's Shanghai and The Blackwater Inn.  The grill is on Yellowstone Boulevard near the Little League fields.  We had gyros and soup.  Average, nothing to write home about, certainly not overflowing like Fontana, nor as tasty. But local and easy to sit and eat and leave.  We went to Joe's Shanghai in Flushing with Jill and Lenny.  Soup dumplings of course; just pork and pork and crab; young chow rice; pork and string beans in black bean sauce and prawns and scallops in garlic sauce. Yum! And because we went early, we just walked in and sat down...priceless :)  Michael and I also went to The Blackwater Inn last week (used to be called The Old Brog) on Metropolitan Avenue.  Beers; shepherd's pie and chicken Caesar.  Their shepherd's pie used to be better, but you can walk in and sit down.

Lately I have a thing about waiting for a table. Pisses me off.

Jesse is home and I have also been cooking:  Chicken soup, chicken cutlets, shrimp in a garlicky marinara over linguine.  Tomorrow is pork roast with sauerkraut; salt potatoes (small white potatoes, boiled in a pot of water with a TON of salt) and Brussels sprouts.

Saturday is Glenn and Eileen's annual ornament exchange party and I am bringing Old Bay wings.

Sunday I am doing nothing :)

The Good Life Ain't so Good

Saturday night, Steve and Lori called and asked us to eat dinner with them.  It was such treat for the four of us to go out with kids.  We went over to their house first for wine and apps (Iavarone...YUM) and then decided on going to The Good Life in Masspequa Park.  We called at 7, they told us to come on down, showed up at 8, seated at 9. Not so good so far. It's 9:30 no food. Beer flight spilled on our lap! Bus boy who cleaned up with a wad of napkins NEVER washed his hands afterwards! Patty melt cold. French onion soup cold. Shepherds pie was a salty soup. We ordered a bottle of wine and it took over 20 minutes.  The waitress said she asked for someone to go get her the bottle twice. The manager couldn't give a shit. Wish the owner knew what was going on here. We wanted to like this place so much and it was such a disappointment.

But as always, it's the company you keep, so the evening was worth it!

On the other hand, Friday night we went out with Dina and Dmitry to Jack and Nellie's on Ascan Avenue.  It was Great! From the hostess to the service to the food.  The only not so great thing was the apple tart for dessert.  It was cold and semi-tasteless.  However, we would go back in a minute. Love this place!

We had:  A 3 cheese board; shrimp quesadilla; lamb meatballs over pureed cauliflower; short rib sliders with caramelized onions (Michael said the rolls were dry); warm olives; artichoke cheese dip (holy crap, it's good) sweet pea bruschetta and the apple tart.  Coffee was good too.  And even better, we got there at happy hour so the wine bottles were $24 each, so we ordered two at the same time (a Malbec).  We we very happy!

Another night with friends.  What could be better!

The Irish Ivy

Tuesday night I met Barbara, Jennie and Jackie for our annual Christmas trek.  We began at 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue.  Into Bryant Park for the one hundred holiday and food kiosks surrounding the skating rink and big, blue, beautiful Christmas tree.  Then we walked to Grand Central for their Holiday boutique.  More upscale in quality and price.  Afterwards we wandered for dinner, passed by several very expensive restaurants and settled upon The Irish Ivy (http://www.theirishivy.com/).

We had a few beers and cocktails, then ate:  Shepherd's pie; beef sliders; Buffalo chicken nachos and a turkey club.  Everything was good and the waiter was sooooo cute, and had a great Irish accent.  Always great company and tonight made better by a taste of Ireland :)

Arcane

Last Thursday night I went with Barbara, Paul, Jackie, Andrew, Kenny and Joyce to see Katie play acoustic guitar and sing at a special lesbian night at the Alphabet Lounge.  Afterwards we went to eat dinner at Arcane (http://www.arcanebistro.com/Arcane/Main.html) on Avenue C, across the street from the Alphabet Lounge.

They were very accommodating when we first told them our party would be 12 people, they actually moved a couple from their seats for us. Then when we were ultimately only 7, they were gracious about it. They bill themselves as Creole-Caribbean-French.  I can see why, but I did not find their food selection to be out of the ordinary.  Their website mentions conch, for instance, and there wasn't any on the menu. I understand that their menu changes not only seasonally, but with what's freshest and most available.  We had:  Sweet potato soup (not really sweet potato-y, but with a hint of spice); salad with shrimp and avocado (no flavor at all); french fries (really good); beef empanadas (they liked them, but nothing special-should have been more impressive-not like Tower Isles) although the spicy sauce accompanying them was really good; Chicken was good and fresh shucked oysters were a BIG hit.  Nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either.

As always, the company makes the meal!!!

Lately I have been cooking:  Garlic soup with homemade croutons; Tortellini soup with spinach; Broiled shrimp with horseradish sauce; The Best Blueberry Pancakes (recipe to follow).

We've also been to Dani's for dinner and Fairway for shopping.

Tonight begins my Christmas season.  I have already hung the stockings, put out the electric candles on the windowsill (just 3, 1 in each window in the living room) and addressed and stamped our Christmas cards.  Tonight Barbara and I and maybe Jennie, will go to Bryant Park at 42nd Street to browse the many quaint gift kiosks that they put up every year around this time.  The skaters are on the ice and Christmas is in the air.  Afterwards, we go to Grand Central to their Holiday boutique-also very nice, interesting gifts.  Then dinner, of course, anywhere we end up.  Each year is different, but this annual trek is one of my favorites!

Buttermilk Pancakes

During the Week

Since Thanksgiving, and leftovers and pizza and Chinese food...which all seem to go together every year somehow..I have been cooking.

One night was rigatoni with peas in a pink sauce that I made by cheating :)  Sauteed onions and garlic in olive oil, add Rao's marinara and heavy cream, salt and pepper and stir. Yum!

Another night was stuffed pork chops:  Bone-in thick pork chops, sliced open to make a pocket.  I made stuffing first:  Sauteed onions, carrots, celery, garlic, apples, fresh sage, rosemary and thyme added to...a box of Stove Top stuffing for pork :) and chicken stock.  Stuffed the stuffing in the chops, browned them in olive oil, salt and pepper on the stove then finished them in the oven.  By the time I was done, I was in no mood to make a vegetable, so I didn't.  Michael ate one chop and saved the other one and I had soup.

Turkey chili with jalapeno cornbread was another night.  I use my own dry adobo for the seasoning in the chili along with ground turkey, crushed tomatoes, onions, garlic and small red beans half crushed, half whole.  The cornbread is from a Michael Chiarello recipe that I adulterate.

Lastly, I am going out tonight to see Barbara's niece Katie play guitar and sing somewhere in Manhattan so I will not be making dinner.  However, Castillian garlic soup is on the menu for Friday night. Not sure I will make anything else though...

Let's Talk Turkey

I brine my turkey.  Apple cider vinegar (raw-unfiltered), black peppercorns, chicken broth, water and ice.  Turkey in a brine bag, bag in a large pot, pour brine over, make sure to cover completely. Let sit overnight.  Pat dry, rest at room temperature for a few hours, peel skin back, smear butter and herbs under skin, butter over skin with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, then onion, carrot, celery and lemon in cavity, broth in bottom of roasting pan, cover with foil (remove foil for browning), roast with  probe, remove at 165 degrees and let sit.   Then have Michael decorate bird and platter with seasonal greens and flowers.  It's beautiful!

This year our menu is:  Salmon marinated in fennel, olive oil and lemon; tomato, mozzarella and basil for appetizers. Turkey, of course, creamed spinach au gratin, mashed sweet potatoes with mini marshmallows, corn chowder with bacon (OMG), beets, cranberry sauce and gravy.  My mother in law is making stuffing with breakfast sausage that is heavenly.  Dessert is carrot cake (ala Silver Palate cookbook) and chocolate chip cookies.

I will try for the first time, hot apple cider steeped with Earl Grey tea bags, wine, beer, etc...

All yummy and with fun company. Hope yours is groovy too!

Thanksgiving with the Angels

Of course, the title of this post can be construed in many ways...thinking of those we have lost over the years, who will not be with us in body, but with us in spirit instead at the dinner table; and thinking of those who have been away from us and come home to fill our hearts with love.

Thanksgiving through Christmas and then New Years is my favorite season of the year (excluding summer at the beach, of course).  The air is cooler, the stores are brighter, the scents of cider and pumpkin and spices abound, family and friends are somehow closer and warmer.  This may seem a bit Hallmark but it exists nonetheless.

There are friends we see more often during this time of the year, not sure why, but Joe says it's "feast or famine." We like the feast :)

I look forward to Thanksgiving at our house, Christmas Eve at our house, Christmas day at Joe and Denise's, the Creutz ornament party, New Year's Eve dinner with Joe, Denise, Tom and Monica and then ringing in the New Year at Leslie's.  These have become traditions for us and though we can be flexible if necessary, we like this routine, it suits us and makes us feel comfortable.

I plan our Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners in advance; I order from Fresh Direct for Thanksgiving and it feels like Christmas morning when the boxes come and I get to open them all to find just what I need to prepare a turkey feast!  I shop for Christmas Eve and that's special in itself; choosing just what I hope our friends will love to eat.

Ok...corny enough for you? Sorry...it's real.  We love our friends and family and "framily".  Happy to spend time with all of you...Now...Let it Snow!

Ithaca, Oneonta, Sandy and Dee's

A lot has been going on in the past few weeks:

Michael and I went to Ithaca to bring Kaa to his new home.  Very successful endeavor. He's already shed and eaten in his new home!

While visiting with Margo and Mike we went to an Oktoberfest of sorts on the Commons.  There were vendors with local beer and wine and food.  We drank a bit from here and there, then walked over to the Bangwagon Pub (http://www.bandwagonbeer.com/index.html) for a late lunch/early dinner.  Their friend Doug joined us too.  We had:  Spanakopita, Ginger-scallion-pork dumplings, Shrimp bisque, Chipotle chicken sandwich and Beer battered catfish.  Two flights of beer and a raspberry-jalapeno beer too.  All was good and company better!

We strolled the Commons afterwards and found a new store:  F. Oliver's (http://folivers.com/). They sell oils and vinegars and none of the stuff that detracts from their products like soap and candles.  Wow!  The people that work there were wonderful.  Helpful, friendly, funny and kind.  They have more than 40 kinds of oils and vinegars and we tried many.  You can sample whatever you like.  We especially loved the Sweet Rich Cherry dark balsamic vinegar and the Fresh Pressed Meyer Lemon extra virgin olive oil.  Most bottles are $15 and there are also gift packages of 4 small bottles for $20.  We will be back!

We left Ithaca after a quick visit from Jesse :) and headed out early Sunday morning to Oneonta to visit with Sarah, Glenn, Eileen, Emily and Rich.  We had brunch at the Autumn Cafe (http://www.autumncafe.com/).  They have a great specials menu on a large blackboard.  We had:  Eggs Benedict, one with spinach and one with Canadian bacon; Blueberry pancakes; Challah french toast; tons of bacon, coffee and hot chocolate.  We had a great time with our closest friends!  We left soon afterwards hoping to avoid the beginning of Hurricane Sandy, and we were successful.

While we were home for the following week during and after Sandy, I cooked:  Chicken Cacciatore and turkey chili on Monday and Tuesday which we shared with Jill and Lenny.  Lamb chops on Wednesday and cutlets on Thursday.  We went out to dinner on Friday with Jill, Lenny and her sister Karen, who Michael referred to as "our sister in law" during introductions to Dee and Arman (very sweet).  We had brick oven pizza (yum), salad, fried calamari and artichoke-spinach dip, rosemary turkey burger, wine and cocktails and a big ass margarita for Michael.  So fun!

Saturday night we had Glenn and Eileen over for dinner.  They have been without electricity since Sandy.  They were so sick of pizza and take out so they were happy to eat:  Prime rib roast; rigatoni with pink sauce and peas and mesclun salad with goat cheese, beets and bacon in a Dijon vinaigrette.  More wine, beer and scotch.  Cherry cheesecake and Pizza Crumb for dessert.  It was a great evening.  The 4 of us rarely spend time together.

Sunday I made Jill's grandma's Jewish wedding soup.  Last night Michael had leftovers and tonight is chicken and string beans sauteed with soy, garlic and ginger.

And that's all folks!!!

Fall Fare

Last week Jennie and I took Barbara out for her birthday. I won't say which one it was, but next year is BIG.

We went to Bamboo Ya on Queens Boulevard.  We have been here before and we sat at the same tatami table with our shoes off.  We had many cups of hot sake and we shared a bunch of small plates:  Cigar spring rolls, salmon skin roll, sweet potato roll, chicken yakitori and vegetable gyoza. We also shared a piece of fried cheesecake for dessert.  Their desserts leave much to be desired, but the menu is good, the food is good and the service is good. And not expensive either :)

Happy Birthday Gracie!

We also went out with Jill, Lenny, Karen, Vince and Patty to Dinosaur BBQ after Jill finished her Avon breast cancer walk.  It has become a yearly ritual.  Mostly beer all around, I had 2 bloody Mary's; garlic chipotle wings and fried green tomatoes for the table.  Then chicken, pork, brisket and a portobello mushroom (with a bit pf pulled pork) for me.  Chocolate ice box cake for dessert and I almost fell asleep on the way to the car. Yummy and great company!

Last week I made lasagna with my own homemade pork sausage.  I made the sausage a week or so ago and froze it.  I ground up country pork boneless spare ribs with fennel seed, fresh garlic, parsley and Parmesan cheese (salt and pepper too).  I have been babysitting Jill's Kitchen Aid mixer (goody for me) and I bought the meat grinder attachment for it.  Works very well, cleans up easily and I am sure there will be more grinding in my future.

Saturday night was our Polikoff Party.  We haven't had one in years.  Forest Hills crowd mainly from Little League.  Wine, beer, Michael's amazing margaritas, Old Bay chicken wings, crudite, cheese, crackers, olives and the rest was frozen appetizers from Costco.  So much dessert-I am cookied out.  And that's not a bad thing.  But since we are visiting Ithaca this weekend, the cookies are going too :)

Loss

No, this has nothing to do with losing food, although that would be sad too.

Last week Glenn and Eileen's dog Edward died.  He was a twelve year old black Lab, and without a doubt, the best dog in the entire world that I ever met (aside from my own, PooDell, who I loved from when I was 5 years old to 21, and their former dog, Franklin).  Okay so that's three world's greatest dogs, but who's counting.

Eddie was my friend. I brought him treats or a bone or toys every time we visited the Creutz'.  He jumped and ran and brought me dishtowels and shoes to show his appreciation.

He was gentle and warm and loving.  He was fun to play with and snuggle up to.  He loved to go to work with Glenn at the golf course and run around and eat from the dumpster...and throw up.  When Michael played golf, Eddie would ride in the cart with him.  He loved Jesse and Jesse loved him right back.

Emily and Sarah grew up with Eddie and he was a best friend to both of them.  Eddie-Ed had a great life and he made everyone else's life great too!

Bye Eddie-Ed.  I love you and miss you.

Oh Boy! So Much to Say...

Michael and I met my brother and his girlfriend for dinner last Monday night at Iavarone in Lake Success.  They have one shop with pizza up front and a sit down restaurant in the back, also they are renovating their food store into a larger space (http://www.ibfoods.com/cafe/).

We had:  Caesar salad, chicken scarpariello, lobster ravioli (kinda yucky I must say), chicken & shrimp Francese and chocolate cake.  Afterward, we checked out the new store in progress.  It was fun!

On Friday, we picked up some Cuban sandwiches and yellow rice and black beans from Amor Cubano (http://www.amorcubanonyc.com/IEHome.html) on 111th Street and Third Avenue.  Yummy, but way to long to take out.

Saturday night our friends from Maryland, Dean and Donna, came up for a visit, stayed with us and we went to see Craig Ferguson at Radio City.  He was too hysterical and my face hurt from laughing.  Before the show we ate at West End (http://www.westendnyc.com/).  Our friend Mike is the manager there :) We had:  Wine and rum and Italian Surfers (the bartender was nice enough to google the recipe for Donna: 2 parts pineapple juice, 1 part amaretto almond liqueur and 1 part Malibu® coconut rum.  We shared:  Tuna tartare -soooo good; veggie quesadilla; New England clam chowder and Beet salad.  Then we had a burger, grilled cheese and a chicken BLT.  Everything was great!! And the company was better!

Sunday morning was bagels from Adam's Bagels on Woodhaven, along with cream cheese, whitefish salad, juice and coffee.

Yesterday, my roommate from college, Sue, was in NYC.  I met her at her hotel and we went to Rue 57 (http://rue57.com/#Home).  We shared:  French onion sup and Caesar salad and good bottle of Cote Du Rhone.  It was great seeing her.  We really miss each other.  Afterwards, we met Michael at Penn Station and took the train to Secaucus, then transferred to another train to Giants Stadium (excuse me-MetLife Stadium) to tailgate with Steve Shapiro, his daughter Michelle and his brother in law Joe before the Jets game.  Great to all be together again (Michael, Steve, Sue and I all went to Brockport together).  They went into the game and we took the same two trains back to the city.  Sue realized that she lost her driver's license and called Rue 57.  They had found it!  Now the three of us went back together and decided to have drinks, coffee and dessert (apple tart-amazing).  We talked and laughed and reminisced and met a great couple from Canada.

I always forget about Rue 57. I don't know why it is not on my radar.  I love that place!!

I wanted a buggy ride through Central Park, so we petted some of the horses and then changed out minds and decided to go back when it was lightly snowing and romantic :)  We went back to Sue's hotel, hung around her room, talked and laughed some more about college friends and antics.  Then Michael and I took a cab home.  Nice treat and a change from the subway.  It was an amazing day with our some of our greatest and long-time friends!!!!!

Today I made homemade pork sausage which I will make into meat sauce later.  The rest went into the freezer to save for a future lasagna.

Hopefully we will see Jill and Lenny for dinner Friday night, because believe it or not, we haven't seen them in a while.

The merchant's House

It's not a restaurant. It's a museum.  Jackie is a volunteer guide on some weekends, so Barbara, Paul and I went to see her last weekend.  www.merchantshouse.org.  Totally worthwhile destination.  Cute neighborhood for restaurants and shops too.

The tour began all the way upstairs (had to catch my damn breath) in the servant's quarters.  We made our way all the way down to the kitchen and yard ourside.  Jackie knows it all, she's a great guide and even gave us a tidbit or two off the usual script :)

Afterwards we all went out for a late lunch to Veselka (www.veselka.com) a Ukrainian restaurant specializing in pierogies.  We had: Borscht, split pea soup, blintzes, pierogies of all varieties and meatless stuffed cabbage.  Tea, hot cider and Ukrainian beer also.  Great day!! Michael and I ordered in Chinese for dinner.

Sunday Michael and I went to the Austin Street street fair with Jill and Lenny.  Once in the spring and once in the fall we make the same trek.  Gyros, crepes, chicken fajitas, pizza, zeppoles, pretzels and a few bottles of water.  I bought a great dress from Nanako (www.nanakoclothes.com) and pickles, of course.  Jill bought eye glasses, gifts and pickles too.  We lost them somewhere along the way and we ended up at the Little League fields where the FDNY had set up a rock climbing wall for the kids.  There were also tables around with info from emergency response, fire dept, free kid ID fingerprinting, etc...Leftovers for dinner, plus the small apple pie we got at the farmer's market.

Hope your weekend was just as good!!

Bare, Press, Agora and Barosa

Recently we've been dining out frequently:

We've been to Bare Burger (http://www.bareburger.com/) twice.  The first time it was just Michael and I.  We had: The Big Blue Bacon-danish blue cheese, bourbon sauteed mushrooms, apple smoked onions, blackened maple bacon, lettuce and apple chutney with a bison burger on a wheat flour wrap.  Also a Maple Bacon Cheesebareburger-sharp cheddar, blackened maple bacon (one tiny slice), lettuce, tomato and mayo on a brioche bun.  Along with a side of onion rings-really good.  We asked that they not be fried in peanut oil.  The service was good and the burgers were fine.  Nothing to write home about.  The next time we went with Barbara and Paul after seeing Rear Window at the Midway Theater in honor of it's 70th anniversary-great show on the big screen!  We had:  The Western-pepper jack, blackened maple bacon, fried onions, house-made coleslaw and peppercorn steak sauce with a turkey burger on a wheat flour wrap.  Also a Pesto Red Pepper Burger-smoked mozzarella, roasted red peppers, baby spinach and pesto mayo on a brioche bun with a portobello mushroom cap. Also Ostrich sliders and a House salad along with assorted pickles and cole slaw-very good slaw!  So the company was good and that makes the meal, but the food was again, just average.

Press 195 on Bell Boulevard in Bayside is a great place for friends and sandwiches.  We went with Dina and Dmitry and we had: Baby beet salad and an order of Belgian frite.  Then  The Bell BBQ Classic-grilled warm bbq chicken with fresh sliced avocado, melted Vermont cheddar, cilantro, melted Monterrey jack and creamy cilantro-lime dressing.  Also a grilled portabello mushrooms, fresh baby arugala and goat cheese with roasted garlic and black olive spread.  Also a spicy Buffalo chicken fingers, chunky blue cheese dressing and julienne carrots and celery.  And a classic burger.  A few beers, a few glasses of wine and good friends!  Always a pleasure!

We went to Agora taverna on Austin Street for my birthday with Jill and Lenny.  We got a table outside and watched a few people argue over a parking spot :)  We had a bottle of Greek wine (Stag's Head) and a Horiatiki salad-tomatoes, feta, cucumbers, olives, green peppers, oil and vinegar.  Grilled octopus-so yummy with capers and the mixed spread platter.  Dinner was grilled shrimp, chicken and pasta with meat sauce.  Dessert was yogurt with sour cherries and a chocolate souffle with ice cream.  Add ouzo and Greek coffee and it was a fun night with great friends!

Once again, for my birthday, which seems to have lasted a long time...We went to Barosa with Denise and Joe:  Fried calamari arrabiata-yum! Stuffed artichoke-yum! Arugala salad. Linguine with seafood in a champagne sauce; penne vodka without prosciutto; chicken scarpariello and rigatoni Barosa with broccoli rabe, sausage and cherry peppers.  They were out of zabaglione and for the life of me I cannot remember dessert.  Anyway, another evening with great friends!

What a life!!!

Jack & Nellie's

Barbara and Jennie took me out to dinner for my birthday last week.  Seems I had at least 3 celebratory dinners with friends and that's great!

Our usual routine is to meet at the corner (same corner for 15 years) and walk to Austin Street.  We then mosey around until we find someplace we like (or that has available tables). This time we walked with a purpose because we knew where we were going:  Jack & Nellie's.  It's in the space where Q Thai used to be on Ascan Avenue.

It's a small, quiet, dark place with a bar and tables.  There is a hostess, servers, bartender and a wine bottle opener (NOT a sommelier).  We ordered a bottle of Malbec which none of the staff knew anything about :)  Then a woman comes over with the bottle and says "I will be opening your wine bottle this evening."  Sommelier we thought...pretentious for Forest Hills.  Anywho...she didn't know anything about that wine or any other for that matter.  Jennie figured she was the only staff person who knew how to use a cork screw.  The wine was ok.

The food was really good:  Cheese plate with cow, sheep and goat milk cheeses along with grapes, fig jam, strawberries, sliced pear and great crostini.  We also had a manchego and mushroom quesadilla with jalapeno corn relish (sans jalapeno-no idea why it wasn't there).  Artichoke-cheese dip that rivals my own; lemon zested warm olives.  Wild boar pate with cornichons, pickled chestnuts (not a great idea), fig jam and really yummy mustard with more great crostini.

We discussed our love of small plates (or tapas) and a desire to open our own restaurant one day. That led to talk of living all together, which led to The Golden Girls, which led to Barbara announcing that she would be "Estelle Getty."  Which led to peals of hysterical laughter.  It was a fun evening and needs to be repeated.

Food Glorious Food

At Home:

Sundried tomato chicken sausage with sauteed Brussels Sprouts made with mirepoix, garlic and oil!

Dry rubbed chicken drumsticks (salt, pepper, garlic, smoked Spanish paprika) finished with jerk sauce and broccoli with garlic and oil on the side!

Pork tenderloin with salad:  Mesclun greens with goat cheese, beets, bacon and homemade Dijon vinaigrette!

Chicken Marsala with a wedge salad:  Iceberg, cut cherry tomatoes, bacon and homemade blue cheese dressing (blue cheese, buttermilk, sour cream, mayo, salt, pepper and a splash of vinegar!

Out:

We went to Cafe Mogador in Williamsburg (http://www.cafemogador.com/williamsburgh.html) with Joe and Denise.  We had:  Sauteed shrimp with garlic; falafel; cheese with hummus; Arabic salad (same as Israeli salad). Then:  Moroccan fish tagine (sea bass in spicy tomato broth with veggies); chicken tagine; mixed grill; they all came with basmati rice or cous cous.  Turkish coffee too!

The service was very good, they offered us our choice of tables, filled our water glasses, cleared dishes, offered desert, etc...Space is lovely both inside and out.  A few items we wanted were no longer available, and on a Saturday night at 7pm, that shouldn't have been the case. However, a repeat visit is worth the trip, especially with the company :)

Afterwards, we stopped by The Meatball Shop (http://www.themeatballshop.com/), not for meatballs but for dessert.  Michael wanted to try their Ice Cream Sandwich:  Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies with espresso ice cream.  Yum at $5 each.  The place was packed.  Maybe we'll try the meatballs next time.

Wo Hop Upstairs not Down

Downstairs at Wo Hop is for tourists and high school kids.  I should know, that's where we went at all hours of the evening and wee hours of the morning for Chinese food when we were in high school.  Now you see the tourists lining up on the stairs and on the sidewalk.

So we go to Wo Hop upstairs just a few doors down.  They have separate kitchens and their food is not the same in both locations.

Last night Michael and I drove into Chinatown, parked on Bayard Street and walked up Mosco Street (they film here often) to Mott Street.  We had:  Hot and sour soup for two (with tomatoes and peas-odd I know, but really good) however, sweeter than usual; fried vegetable dumplings; roast pork fried rice (that is brown, not yellow as it is in Forest Hills); eggplant in garlic sauce and clams with black bean sauce. All was yummy!

Tonight I am making chicken sausage (on the stove) and roasting Brussels sprouts with mirepoix and bacon ends (from Trader Joe's) in the oven.

I will probably cook Wednesday and Thursday as well, but Friday night we are going to my favorite "restaurant" in Forest Hills: Denise and Joe's!

Have a good week.

Since Forever :)

So...

We've been to Dee's twice.  Once for Michael's birthday and then again for Jesse's.  Their pizza is always good, service as well.  Michael favors the rosemary turkey burger and Jesse usually tries a new pasta dish.

We've had take-out Chinese twice.  Once from Panda (near the fields on Yellowstone) where they took an hour to deliver (I know, waiting for Chinese for an hour, unthinkable). And the food was cold, not surprising, and they wouldn't give us a discount.  They are on the boycott list.  The other time we ordered from Hop Bo Palace right here on Queens Boulevard.  Average food, quick delivery. Just what you think it will be.

Moving along, we had a night of leftovers and a pot of home made pasta fagioli.  Yum!  Then a night of take-out from Press 195.  Their Belgian fries are great with chipotle mayo (although they don't travel so wel).  We had two sandwiches:  Spicy Buffalo panko breaded chicken with blue cheese and julienne carrots and celery and a Grilled portobello, arugula, goat cheese and roasted garlic and  black olive spread.  You can figure out which one of us ate which one :)

We tried a new Greek place with Joe and Denise called Psari (www.psari-restaurant.com)  but I wouldn't recommend it.  Cute place, really good grilled octopus, but average everything else.

Michael and I went to the Smorgasburg (www.brooklynflea.com/smorgasburg) on a Saturday afternoon.  The day was beautiful, the food was great.  We had Sunday Gravy (just what you think it is) and way yummy! Chocolate coffee stout cookies from the Cookie Guild.  Great horseradish from ISH.  Iced coffee from Grady's cold brew coffee concentrate. A chicken sandwich from Schnitz (Michael liked it a lot).  A brisket sandwich.  A lobster roll (but they are better at the lobster joint in Greenpoint).  A lobster and shrimp ceviche Yum! And I can't remember anymore right now.  But well worth the visit.  Afterwards, when we were stuffed, we took the East River Ferry to Governor's Island and walked around.  On the island they were hosting a roaring 20's party.  It was so cool to see everyone dressed up like flappers and gangsters.  The ferry ride was great because the weather was perfect.  Later that night, Chrysalis came to stay over and we went out to dinner at Dirty Pierre's.  Chicken sandwich, salad and quesadillas!

We've also been to take Jesse up to school so we ate in Ithaca at Viva Taqueria and Yogurtland.  Both are good and just what you think they are.  We also visited Sarah at Oneonta on the way home, so we took her to dinner at the Red Caboose.  Good American food, nice bar, good service.

Since we've been home I made turkey/Italian sausage meatballs with braciole in sauce and a pot of lentil soup.  And that's all folks...

Since July 24-Where the F Have I Been

Well...Sine July 24 we've been to the Shapiros, the Creutz', the Gandiellos and the Brennans. We've also been to Dee's and West End Bar & Grill.  I've also cooked.  So here goes:

I went to see Michelle Shapiro in her showcase.  She sang and danced with a cast of other children.  It was great.  Best kids show I've seen so far!  Afterwards, Michael took the train to Wantagh and we ate dinner at Steve and Lori's-Steak and shrimp and goodies from Iavarone!

Pizza night at the Creutz' is always great.  Pizza from Emilio's!!! We also watched the opening of the 2012 Summer Olympics.  We also went crabbing, but were not successful.  Glenn tied chicken drumsticks to long pieces of twine, we stood in the wavses and threw in our chicken and slowly dragged the line back.  Sarah caught two and no one else caught shit! We were going to eat our full bucket, but we didn't have a full bucket :) We will be back for more again.  It was really fun!

At the Gandiellos we shared in Joe's 50th birthday celebration and Diana's graduation from high school.

At the Brennans we had a BBQ with Tom at the grill.  Good conversation and the best shrimp I've had all summer-orange marmalade did the trick!

We had our Annual Polikoff Family Beach Day on August 2.  29 people this year, a record for us! Great weather, great friends, great drinks (pineapple vodka-two cut up pineapples soaked in vodka for 3 days in the fridge) and great food from Mother Kelly's.  We celebrated birthdays for Joe, Michael, Glenn and Jesse!

We went to Dee's on August 7 for Michael's 51st Birthday with the Wisners.  Pizza was great. Company was better :) Happy birthday Michael!!!

We took Michael's mom out to dinner on Wednesday.  It was a nice family evening!  We went to West End Bar and Grill on 48th and 8th.  Our friend Mike is the manager.  The food was really good and the service was perfect!  http://www.westendnyc.com/.  Their menu is perfect.  Not too many choices and not too little.  Total recommendation from me :) and we will be back with friends!

I also cooked a bit:  Kasseler Rippchen with Sauerkraut (smoked pork chops braised in sauerkraut, onions and white wine).  Got the meat from Fresh Direct, it was terrific.  Also made Pat LaFrieda's dry aged beef hamburgers (also from Fresh Direct).  They were a bit overdone (sorry guys) but the flavor and texture were awesome.  If you haven't cruised Fresh Direct's website lately, go back and look around.  I also made broiled chicken drumsticks in an Oaxacan bbq sauce.  Chicken cutlets, beet, bacon and goat cheese salad, a bit of take out and here we are.  Another Friday night and I am not cooking.

Have a good weekend!

Yummy Dinner

Last week I made a very yummy dinner (if I do say so myself).  Homemade turkey chili, cornbread and Brussels sprouts:

Turkey chili was:  sauteed onion and garlic, dark meat ground turkey, small red beans (as opposed to larger kidney beans) drained and rinsed (can't stand that yucky thick juice stuff), can of stewed tomatoes, splash of Rao's marinara sauce, and two heaping tablespoons of my homemade dry adobo.

Cornbread was:  Michael Chiarello's recipe, yet altered.  I used chopped jalapenos instead of his damn hot peppers, grated parmigiano instead of asiago and regular corn meal instead of very fine.

Brussels sprouts were:  rinsed, halved, tossed with chopped Trader Joe's bacon ends, tossed with olive oil, salt and pepper and roasted in the oven.

I made a big pot of sauce (gravy) yesterday.  I browned boneless country pork ribs (cut into smaller pieces), added chopped onion and garlic with two cans of crushed tomato, red wine, salt, black pepper, fresh snipped oregano from my garden and fresh snipped basil from Steve Shapiro's garden.  It simmered all day.

Chicken cutlets, roasted chicken, rice, broccoli and salad have also been staples this summer.

I am going to see Michelle Shapiro in her summer showcase (musical arts) tomorrow, then we'll have dinner with them.

Saturday is a party at the Gandiello's for Joe's 50th and Diana's high school graduation!

Sunday is a BBQ at the Brennan's!

Maybe I'll cook some more next week :)

23rd Anniversary

Our 23rd wedding anniversary was Monday :)

We spent the day at the beach with Jill, Judy & Isa and Lenny.  There was fishing, netting, kite flying, boogie boarding, shell collecting, swimming, sun and surf  (the surf was what I call salad water-it was full of seaweed).  But we spent most of the day on the bay side, where there was no seaweed. Isa is 11, she is Judy's daughter.  She is great! I don't know who had a better day, Isa or Michael?

After the beach Michael and I went home, showered, changed and drove into the city to El Quijote for dinner. We had our usual:  1/2 carafe of red sangria, garlic soup, salad with blue cheese and vinaigrette, arroz con pollo (white meat only) with garlic sauce on the side and a 1 1/4 pound lobster.  Cafe con leche, iced espresso and flan and we were happy and stuffed.  It was a great day!

Last night I met my friend Joy from camp and her husband Jay at a restaurant called Bianca at 5 Bleeker Street (http://biancanyc.com/).  It's a very cute place with wood floors and Grandma's kitchen decorations, along with wine bottles and dish towels for napkins.  The bathroom is WAY TOO HOT. And the restaurant is WAY TOO LOUD, however, it was all good.

We had:  Carciofini-thin artichoke slices with parmigiano in a lemon dressing; Pomodori-tomatoes with red onions and anchovies and a salad of endive, radicchio, frisee.  Dinner was: Lasagnette di Verdure-eggplant, tomato and zucchini tart with grated parmigiano; Spaghettini al Pomodoro-with tomato and basil and Tagliolini ai frutti di mare-clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp in garlic and light tomato sauce.  Two glasses of wine, a bottle of Pellegrino and the check was $75.  Wow.  They have great prices and good food and good service.  I will go back with Michael and friends!

Afterwards, and the reason we were in the city, was to go to Von Bar next door for a Towanda get-together.  It was great fun to see my camp friends again (away from camp). The bar, hoever, has huge prices.  A glass of cabernet and a gin and tonic was $24!  Holy crap.  The downstairs bartender was nice, the upstairs bartender not so much.  One review on Yelp called her a "c".  Other than that, it was another great night.

I seem to be having a bunch of those lately :)

I am waiting for the shoe to drop...or maybe not :)

Cedar Creek

Last night we went to Cedar Creek in Glen Cove with Joe and Denise.  We had been here once before with Glenn, Eileen and Bruce (B1).

The service was just as good, the food was good too.  This time it was quieter, though it was a Thursday and not a Saturday.

We had:  Loaded Iceberg Wedge salad with bleu cheese, bacon, tomatoes and red onions; salt and pepper calamari with pineapple and peppers and tuna tartare.  We also had scotch, cabernet and a saki-tini that tasted a bit like floor cleaner, but they added some lychee juice and it was better.  Dinner was:  Spinach linguine; fish and chips; chicken paillard and turkey (TV) dinner.  Dessert was apple crisp and decaf cappucino.  Yum! Nothing to complain about, yet nothing to rush back for either.  Joe commented that the bathrooms were clean (I guess that's a plus).

Tomorrow we are going to see Futhur (a Dead band) in Coney Island with Jill and Lenny.  That may mean an obligatory stop at the original Nathan's (or not), it may mean pot will be smoked (or not).  It's all up in the air...

Monday is our 23rd wedding anniversary, although we have been together for 29 years.  We have no plans, dinner is involved I am sure, otherwise we are just happy to be together and happy to have our family and friends!

Bahia Social Club

Saturday after the beach, Michael I went to Bahia Social Club on West Beech Street in Long Beach (http://www.bahiasocialclub.com/eat.html).  We sat outside and had drinks: a CAIPIRINHA which is
brazilian cachaca, muddled lime+sugar and a MOJITO which has rum, muddled lime, sugar and fresh mint.   Their food is served tapas style, so small plates:  fried fish soft flour taco with slaw; fried calamari; arepas with black beans, avocado and jerk chicken.  The waitress never showed up-odd-so the hostess took our order and served us.  Other than that, the food was good and sitting outside on a summer night is heaven!  We walked across the street for frozen yogurt and ice cream afterwards. Yum!

Since Camp

It's been two weeks since Michael and I spent the weekend at my childhood sleep away camp and I've been cooking some, going out some and ordering in some.

We've been to Dani's with the Wisners and had our usuals.  They have a new waiter (not that new, but I've not commented on him before).  He runs around and sweats and works really hard, but falls short of efficiency.  He spends time on unimportant things and leaves things like clearing and setting up new tables.  So there are empty tables with customers waiting.  Maybe he'll figure it out.  He also forgot to order one of our dinners, so that took some time...

Lenny and Karen planned and pulled off a wonderful surprise party for Jill's 50th birthday on Friday night the 15th.  About ten of Jill's girlfriends and family surprised Jill at Sato and the men went to Lenny and Jill's apartment for their own get together.  Then we all met back at Lenny and Jill's for more cocktails, cake and coffee.  Everyone had a great time and the food at Sato is always great. However, our most favorite waitress, Perlin, is no longer there.  After nine years she has gone back to Malaysia :(.  Lenny brought in two 3 foot heroes, antipasto, etc..for the guys. Most importantly, Jill was surprised and had a very good time!

Saturday the 16th, Michael and Lenny had a BBQ for their Little League team (burgers and dogs) and I made cole slaw, mesclun salad and Old Bay chicken wings, which were a big hit.

Father's Day we were supposed to go to the beach but we didn't like the weather.  We went to dinner with the Wisners to the Lobster Joint (http://lobsterjoint.com/) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  What a cool place. You order at the bar inside and then grab a table outside (or you can stay in if you prefer) and your food is brought to you.  We had:  Lobster corn bisque (no cream); fried clam strips and popcorn shrimp for appetizers.  A few Connecticut Lobster Rolls Served Warm with Butter and a few Lobster Club Rolls with Celery, Fresh Herb Mayo, Avocado and Bacon and a burger.  We had two pitchers of beer and Michael had an amazing Bloody Mary.  It was a great dinner.

Barbara and I revisited Atlas Park in Glendale for shopping and lunch.  We didn't buy much, not great stores or anything, but we did eat outside for lunch at Venezia Ristorante.  The food is average, but sitting outside under an umbrella, chatting with my friend and having a glass of wine (while Barb had a few sips of her cucumber-lemonade gin and tonic) was the best part of the day.

Friday night the Wisners came for dinner-we have seen much of them lately :)-and I made BBQ baby back ribs with homemade bbq sauce, farfalle with pink sauce and peas, mesclun salad with beets and goat cheese, tomato and mozzarella, brownies and fruit.  And wine of course!

Saturday we spent at the beach, all day and for dinner too.  It was actually Jill's 50th on Saturday and her sister Karen came too.  We ordered dinner from Mother Kelly's (balsamic chicken, linguine with white clam and Caesar salad).  We had little cakes for dessert that Karen brought and some coffee made in my 4 cup Farberware pot.  The weather was great and we loved the day.

Brett is graduating from high school on Tuesday and we have been invited to join them and their family at The Palm for dinner.  They have a great lobster special and I am jumping in :)

Congratulations Brett and Sarah on their high school graduations!

Camp Towanda

No, it's not a restaurant, nor do they have especially good food or accommodations, but they do have my friends and my memories and my childhood...good and not so good, but always fun!

Michael and I spent this past weekend at my childhood sleep away camp, Camp Towanda, in Honesdale PA.  I was there every summer from 1972 through 1979.  My last year I was a waitress and to this day, it is still my most favorite job I ever had.

We arrived on Friday afternoon to appetizers and a keg of beer.  (Beer is not only highly unusual for camp, it's never been done in my time). So that was exciting.  Drinking out in the open :) instead of doing shots from a pint bottle of Southern Comfort, chasing it with warm water from a gross metal canteen at 2 am, in the rain, under an umbrella, sitting on the boys basketball court, knee to knee with my friend Howie (who passed away recently from cancer).  What a great memory, sad but so makes me smile at the same time.

After we settled into our accommodations (girls bunk 9, in twin beds, with camp sheets, blankets, pillows and towels) we walked to the dining hall for flag lowering and dinner:  spaghetti, meatballs, sauce, frozen veggies (maybe canned), salad and bread-told you it wasn't exciting.  Later we walked and talked and hugged (well, I did) with all my friends.  We drank Patron on ice, had frozen Kit Kats and hot pretzels from the canteen.

Saturday at 8am, rise and shine for reveille (seriously) and flag raising and breakfast at 8:30:  runny eggs or over easy; pancakes, french toast, yogurt and coffee.  The rest of the day was more reminiscing and getting ready for Apache Relay.  It was an abbreviated version with no running (which sort of belies the point) but whatever.  Michael had to pop a balloon and I had to run the baton from girls basketball to beach volleyball.  Lunch was a BBQ with hot dogs, burgers, ribs, cole slaw, potato salad, veggie burgers, beans and of course, bug juice (sort of gross kool aid).

More appetizers later (shrimp cocktail too this time), more beer, less Patron and dinner was:  lemon chicken and rice with frozen/canned veggies and salad.  Very exciting.  Dessert was chocolate cake.

Singing around the campfire, making smores, back to the canteen and then crashing.  Friday night I hardly slept, Saturday night I was dead to the world.  What a day at camp can do for you!

Sunday am was the same breakfast, then saying goodbye, then taking home made turkey club sandwiches to go (best food of the weekend).

I am still smiling.

Homemade Buffalo Chicken Calzones

I found a recipe for calzones while Jesse was away at school.  I asked him if he would like me to make him some when he came home and he said yes, but he wanted Buffalo chicken calzones.

I bought a bag of store made pizza dough, cut it into three pieces, rolled them out to small circles (or a variation of that shape).  The stuffing was made of chicken breasts, onions, garlic and Tabasco Buffalo sauce.  I put the breasts, sliced onion and smashed garlic on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.  I drizzled olive oil all over everything then added salt and pepper.  I baked all at 350 degrees for 1/2 an hour.  I put it all in a large bowl and chopped it up with poultry shears (god they come in handy).  I spooned a third onto each piece of dough, then added shredded mozzarella.  I oiled the edges, folded them in half and pinched them closed.  I brushed egg wash over the tops and baked at 350 for 15 minutes.  They looked beautiful and Jesse came home from work and devoured one!  With a little blue cheese dressing on the side, they are a success!

Saffron

Michael and I went to Saffron (http://www.saffronrestaurantnewyork.com/index.htm) Friday night.  There is parking in the back, a small bar area up front and a decent sized dining room in back.  The staff is friendly and we were seated immediately.  A bit upscale for the area, considering the clam bars and pizza joints around. White tablecloths, but not fancy.  They have a decent selection of tapas under headings such as Meat, Seafood and Veggie, also salads, soups and paella.

We shared a half pitcher of red berry sangria that was good, better than some, not as good as El Quijote (but I must stop comparing).  It was a bit pricey but then I think everything here was a bit pricey for Queens.

We shared the Saffron tomato soup and I loved it.  It reminded me of lobster bisque without the lobster.  Michael thought it was okay.  We also had spicy garlic shrimp with garbanzo beans that was delicious!  We had their version of queso fundido with manchego and black beans.  It was also delicious, but mostly beans (which was ok with me) and house made chips.  Michael ordered the Meat Paella with chorizo, pork, chicken and saffron rice. Good but a bit bland.  He added some chimichurri and some of the garlic sauce from the shrimp and that helped.  Unfortunately, we were stuffed so no flan and cafe con leche.  Maybe next time.

Agora

Tonight I went to Agora on Austin Street with Barbara.  It was great catching up on our families, children and events!

We shared:  Horiatiki salad, mixed spreads with pita and a swordfish kebab with roasted lemon potatoes.  Barb had a blue moon and I had a pineapple vodka (soooo good) and 2 ouzos :)  Then Greek coffee and dessert of shredded phylo, custard, cream and pistachios.

Yum!

Waterzooi

Waterzooi (www.waterzooi.com) is a Belgian bistro in Garden City.  Michael and I were there last Friday night.  Monday nights they have a 3 course dinner matched with 3 Belgian beers.  They also have 22 Belgians on tap!  We had lobster bisque (great, but needed a touch of sherry), French onion soup (very good), double cut bbq pork chops with shrimp mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus (very yummy) and lobster risotto with leeks and corn (could have used a touch of sherry also).  Michael had 2 different beers he liked very much and I had 2 glasses of Cabernet and I liked neither of them (I guess I'll have beer next time).  Their dessert menu looks great too, even though we were too stuffed.   It is a bit loud (actually really loud) and that would be the only draw back.  They have tons of mussel flavors to choose from, and although we don't eat mussels, we thought we'd go back with people who do so we could taste all the different sauces.  Also on the menu are typical fare such a steak frite and Belgian waffles.

Jesse is home and so far he's cooked for himself a few times :) outside on the bbq.  I made him a pot of pasta fagioli, chicken cutlets and lobster tails.  Tonight is brined pork chops on the grill with tomato and mozzarella salad and fried potatoes and onions (like home fries).

I am looking forward to a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend!

Two Pot Pies!

Beef and Stout Pot Pie:  Braised boneless short ribs (or you can use chuck), braised with two bottles of stout (I used oatmeal stout, but Guinness will work too), tons of thinly sliced onion, a bit of garlic and fresh rosemary.  Thinly sliced russet potatoes brushed with olive oil, a little salt and pepper.  Sauteed Brussels Sprouts on the side!

Shrimp and Chorizo Pot Pie:  Sauteed chorizo, shrimp, potatoes, a bit of flour, butter into a roux, add broth, thicken and bake with puffed pastry!

Going Backwards

Last night Michael and I went to Ovelia in Astoria with Joe and Denise.  We asked to be seated at a table serviced by Erica, since she was so great the last time were were there, and we were seated in her section.  Open Table makes it easy to make requests.

We had:  Pikilia dips that included tarama, tzatziki and eggplant; Skordalia with grilled zucchini and squash; grilled kalamari; Titia Pikilia which was broiled feta, kefalograviera (saganaki) and halloumi cheeses (wayyyyyyy yummy) and village salad-typical Greek-except there were no olives (odd).  Dinner was:  Lamburgini-ground lamb burger topped with crimini mushrooms and feta sauce served on a house baked pretzel bun along with hand cut fries; meat free Mousaka-layers of potato, eggplant, zucchini and a mix of vegetables in a tomato sauce topped with bechamel and garides ovelia-sauteed shrimp wrapped in roasted eggplant, baked in tomato sauce and broiled with feta.  Two bottles of Greek Syrah; and then dessert: Greek yogurt with sour cherries and honey and home made apple crumb pie.  Greek coffee; decaf cappucino and decaf espresso on ice and we were DONE.  So good!!

Saturday night Michael and I went to Tortilleria Nixtamal in Corona (http://www.tortillerianixtamal.com/).  We learned about it from Steve and Lori who had seen it on Diners, Drive ins and Dives.  We had:  Mexican Nachos-fresh made nacho chips with beans and melted oaxaca cheese, topped with pico de gallo, avocado and jalapenos; Tortilla soup-spicy broth with chicken and avocado and crunchy nacho chip strips; a bean and avocado taco, a shrimp taco and the Tinga platter-specially seasoned chicken with rice and tortillas.  The tortillas are made on the premises and actually taste of corn.  The sangria was really good too.  We will go back with Steve and Lori next time :)

Friday night we went to Cronin and Phelan in Astoria with Jill and Lenny and we had:  French onion soup; blue cheese burger, shepherd's pie, turkey burger and chicken something (lol, can't remember what Michael had).  Of course a few beers and all was good.

I also need to write a review of Gloria's Pizza on Queens Boulevard next to the Midway theatre.  They are the same Gloria's of Flushing and their pizza is GREAT!  Thin crust, small slices, but great flavor.  Please try it, you will agree.  However, and here comes the but...we have had salad a few times and it is weak-small portions, hardly any grilled chicken and too pricey for what it is.  The heros are nothing to talk about either.  We had meatball parm and eggplant parm and wouldn't bother with either again.  They still do not deliver, but if and when they do, it will be pizza only.

No plans for this weekend, believe it or not :) Michael is riding in the 5 Boro Bike Tour with his sister and niece and Captain Joe.  Good luck to them all!  I am not going...surprised? Not really :)

After Wednesday

Thursday night I went to El Quijote on 23rd Street with my friend Christian from Jury Duty. It was as good as always.  He'd never been there and he liked it a lot.  A large pitcher of red sangria to share :)  Garlic soup, salad and lobster for me :)  salad and arroz con pollo for him.  Two cafe con leches and we were done.  Yum!

Friday night Michael and I went to Dirty Pierre's with Jill and Lenny.  We tried to get into 5 Burro (again) but the wait was too long so we wandered to Dirty Pierre's and waited 15 minutes while having beer and margaritas.  We had:  clams with chorizo (never had before, they were yummy); portobello mushrooms topped with roasted peppers and fresh mozzarella and white cheese empanadas.  More beer, more margaritas and even a cosmo! Then we had goat cheese salad, jerk chicken and a burger.  All good and we had a great time!

Saturday night Michael and I went to Ovelia Psistaria in Astoria with Dina and Dmitry.  None of us had been there before but we would all go back.  Out waitress was Erica and she was terrific!  We had:  Tzatsiki; grilled kalamata; saganaki and village salad (typical Greek).  Everything was really good.  We shared a bottle of Greek Syrah (very good) and Michael had two frozen mojitos that were amazing!  For dinner we had:  Garides ovelia which was sauteed shrimp wrapped in roasted eggplant baked in tomato sauce and broiled with feta and rice on the side; stuffed chicken breast with kafteri cheese and creamy tomato ouzo sauce; and grilled octopus with lemon potatoes.  All yummy, all around.  Dessert was:  Yogurt with sour cherries and fried dough balls (similar to zeppoles) but with honey drizzled over the top.  So sweet!  I had Greek coffee too.  Loved the whole evening, food and friends!

Sunday was Louis' 20th Birthday party and as always, good food, good friends and good times! Thanks Leslie!  Always our pleasure to share your special occasions.

Summer on My Mind

May 1st is the day that we can open up our cabana.  No services at the club except for open bathrooms (quite the necessity).  So naturally I've got summer on my mind and that includes grilling and drinking :)

The new thing at our cabana this summer will be vodka infused with fresh fruit.  I've been reading up on it.  We had pineapple vodka at Agora on Austin Street last week and it was GREAT!  Just cut up pineapple in a glass jar, covered with vodka and left to steep.  Ice in the glass and voila!  Just got a recipe for strawberry vodka too.  (http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2011/06/strawberry-vodka-recipe-infusion/). Totally do-able.

Speaking of Agora, we were there last Friday night with Jill and Lenny.  Their grilled octopus is really good! We had a great time.

Prior to that on Wednesday, Michael and I had haircuts and then stopped at Don Peppe's on Leffert's for the obligatory salad, baked clams and linguine with white clam sauce.  So...if you were never there before you wouldn't notice the difference and it would be fine, however, since we have been going to Don Peppe's for over 20 years (had Michael's 30th birthday dinner there) we noticed.  Here goes:  The salad had exactly 4 olives in it and was mostly iceberg lettuce (tasted great however); the baked clams were good but had too much bread crumbs in the sauce and not enough garlic (Carmine's are better) and the plate for the full order of linguine is smaller than it used to be.  Wine still comes in blank bottles, but no more juice/water glasses, now served in small, cheap wine glasses.  All in all, would go back with a crowd, but no rush.

I am going to El Quijote (yeah) tomorrow night with my new friend Christian whom I met during jury duty and Michael is going bar hopping with Joe.  Friday night we will be at Blacksmith's tavern in Smithtown for a happy hour (s) in memory of Tracy (Glenn's sister); Saturday night we are trying a new Greek place in Astoria (Ovelia Psistaria Bar) with Dina and Dmitry-review to follow and Sunday is Louis' 20th birthday party out at Leslie's.  Looking forward to a great weekend with friends!!

Ferrara's and Shanghai Cafe

Yesterday afternoon I picked up Michael from work and we went to Ferrara's to get Easter bread.  It's our usual before-Easter run.  They make the best egg bread (think Challah) with whole eggs-in the shell-baked right in.  We bought a round seven egg bread to bring the Creutz' for Easter and three 3 egg breads-one for Denise, one for Barbara and one for Chris.  Other than the fact that the place was FULL of tourists and the line moves like a snail, it's always fun to be there.  Their pastries are beautiful!

After getting the bread, we walked to Shanghai Cafe at 100 Mott Street.  Our new place for soup dumplings.  So we had...soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, moo shu pork and veggie fried rice.  Next time no fried rice, too much food, and no scallion pancakes, almost no taste.  But those dumplings are yummy! $25 for dinner for 2!

We went to the Deluxe Meat Market after dinner at 79 Elizabeth Street.  They sell meat (really) and bags and trays of dumplings and mini buns and all sorts of everything Chinese.  They have bins of swimming eels, hopping frogs and other such delicacies (vomit). But I am sure there is a market for them...Stopped for decaf espresso and drove home.  Good day!!

Note:  Last weeks boring food:  Cutlets and salad turned into chicken francese and beet/goat cheese salad; and turkey something became turkey/sundried tomato meatloaf.  I discovered tubes of condiments from Amore in the back of my fridge and used them all:  Garlic paste, tomato paste and herb paste.  They were great additions. If I only remember I have them next time...

Happy Easter and Happy Passover!

Weekend with Friends

Friday night Michael and I went to Fontanta (gyro joint on Francis Lewis) with Lenny, Jill and Brett.  Casual and fun, good food:  Philly cheese steak; chicken wrap, Greek salad with gyro meat; chicken souvlaki and gyro combo platter with rice and soup; fries, hummus and fried calamari. Yum all the way around!

Saturday night Michael and I went down to Jill and Lenny's apartment with Steve and Sue Boyle for drinks and dinner.  Drinks were:  freshly made margaritas; ketel one with cranberry; and beer.  Manchego  and Gruyere cheeses, crackers and thinly sliced pepperoni along with homemade pigs in a blanket went with the first rounds of drinks.  Dinner was linguine carbonara; salad and bread.  Earlier in the day I made chocolate chip cookies to bring; some with dark chocolate, some with white chocolate and some with both. Everything was really good!

Sunday afternoon Michael and I went to see Steve and Lori's girls (Michelle and Alyssa) in the play Into the Woods at the Levitown Hall.  I am not in love with the director of the studio, but the kids love acting and the play was fun.  Afterward we went to dinner at Il Vizio (http://ilvizioristorante.com/ristorante/) in East Meadow with Steve, Lori, Maria and Carla.  We had wine, and more wine...then we ate like there was no tomorrow:  Caesar salad; franchese style mozzarella balls and stuffed portobellos with Gorgonzola and I don't know what but they were from heaven!  Next we had:  Lobster ravioli in a pink sauce with shitake mushrooms and chopped shrimp (unbelievable); stuffed shrimp with crab meat (equally unbelievable); pork chop with cherry peppers; gnocchi with eggplant; and spaghetti with peas (me, I asked for it, it is not on the menu).  Dessert was one tortoni (I had to have it).  We laughed and had a great time! Thanks!

This week at home is not as exciting as the weekend, food wise, anyway :) Last night was mushroom and spinach ravioli (from Fairway) with homemade mushroom and onion cream sauce and a side of Brussels sprouts with pancetta (ok, maybe a little exciting).  Tonight will be chicken cutlets and salad and tomorrow is turkey something (I haven't gotten there yet).

PS:  Jury duty was finally over on Friday.  We found the defendant guilty of manslaughter in the first degree and criminal posession of a weapon in the Fourth degree.  All very interesting and I will miss my new jury friends very much :(

Marianella's and Bare Burger

Last Friday night, Michael, Jill and I went out and headed to Austin Street.  Our destination was 5 Burro, and we even left our name for a table for three even though the stated wait time was THREE HOURS.  Of course, we were not actually going to hang around the sidewalk for THREE HOURS so we went to Marianella's Taqueria near the railroad station for margaritas.  Michael and Jill had two each and I had two beers.  We also shared nachos, guacamole and empanadas.  The food is nothing to speak about, but the margaritas were good.

Now that we had drinks in us, we looked around for food and didn't bother going back to 5 Burro.  We ended up at Bare Burger which is a new place on Austin Street.  Of course, they had no liquor license (boo hoo), but we stayed anyway.  Michael ordered turkey burger sliders.  Jill and I shared one, and we all shared french fries and onion rings.  Hopefully they will get a license soon so we can go back.  Michael wants to try different burgers next time.  The wait staff is really nice, and even though it was crowded, we didn't wait for a table.

I am still on jury duty...seems like forever...and have been cooking this week:  Turkey sloppy Joe's (Michael seems to like them) with salad; Old Bay chicken wings with leftover salad; panko breaded cutlets and tomorrow is chicken sausage with broccoli rabe and farfalle.

Another Week of Jury Duty and Dinners

Today was my twelfth day of jury duty at Queens criminal court in Kew Gardens.  The other jurors and I have become friends. We play crosswords and other games while we wait (and wait (and wait) (and wait) (and wait) for court time to catch up with reality time.

Dinners this week have been:  Turkey burgers and Greek salad; chicken sausage, penne  and broccoli with garlic and oil; chicken marsala with sauteed spinach; and leftovers.  Tonight is undecided as are Saturday and Sunday.
Monday is back to jury duty.  Have a good weekend :)

Last Week

Jerk Chicken

Monday was chicken cutlets with panko breading, baby spring mix with goat cheese, beets and dijon vinaigrette.

Tuesday was chicken sausage, peppers, onions and a wedge salad on the side.

Wednesday was a flat iron steak with carrots, butter and rosemary and portobello mushroom caps.

Thursday was Jerk chicken with sauteed broccoli and cauliflower with garlic, oil, red pepper and bread crumbs.

Friday night Michael went to see the Jerry Garcia band at Brooklyn Bowl and I went out to Leslie's for pizza, and to see her dad, Bruce, since he just had a stint put in and he's doing very well!

Saturday night...how can I explain this without peeing in my pants?  Michael and I had a coupon for Piccolo Italia on Metropolitan Avenue.  It's the only reason we went and we'd never go again.  Picture walking in to an Italian restaurant and the only Italians there are Michael and possibly myself :)  The host was Indian (possibly), the servers are Indian and Russian (maybe), the tablecloths are green (yes, it was St. Patrick's Day but still), the guy singing, yes singing with a microphone no less, is Indian with a screaming Kelly green sequined vest--and he's singing--wait for it--Frank Sinatra.  Can you believe we actually witnessed all this and still sat down?  Anyway, cold antipasto was iceberg lettuce topped with sliced salami and ham, cold tomatoes with mozzarella cheese and a handful of jalapenos (seriously).  I ordered a pizza because I was afraid of everything else and it was just as good as Stoufer's frozen.  Michael had chicken cardenalle (some made up name) with red peppers in a cream sauce that was not too bad.

We did leave immediately after we ate.  The singer was killing us, we couldn't stop laughing.  Needless to say, just walk on by.  We did note, however, that a few doors down, a Turkish places will be opening soon and that we will definitely try.

Have a good week!

Fat Goose

It's the name of the restaurant we went to with Joe and Denise on Saturday night (http://fatgoosewilliamsburg.com/).

We had:  Mixed mushrooms in Oloroso cream over goat cheese bruschetta (Way yummy-a bit too salty-I can't believe I said that); Beet salad in textures-roasted, pickled and flan over baby spring lettuce with goat cheese and walnuts and Spicy tuna empanadas that were great.

Dinner was:  Braised rabbit with cheesy vegetable farro risotto and spicy shrimp over grits.  Also a side order of root vegetable risotto.

A bottle of red and a few scotches; some decaf coffee in a french press and we decided that the food here was really good.  We also decided that the service could use some improvement.  It took about an hour to get a soda; no one paid attention to our bread or water-or lack thereof; it took about ten minutes to be asked if we wanted a drink after we were seated.  However, on the good side, the waiter improved with time and was knowledgeable about the menu and made very good suggestions.  Ambiance is really nice too.

Across the street is a place called Nita Nita (http://nitanitabk.com/) which we want to try out.  It has a garden in the back that is supposed to be very nice to hang out in during the summer.  Menu has items such as:  Gouda mac and cheese; baked shrimp with tomato and goat cheese; polenta dumplings; rosemary and garlic chicken wings...it is a "small plate" place with cheese boards as well as bar snacks, a full bar, various beers and wines.

Meatballs
Wedge Salad
Banana Custard Pie
Roasted Chicken

A week of Dinners

Yes, the Wisners have their apartment back, sort of, and I am just cooking for Michael and myself these days.  Jill needs her counter top put in, a ceiling light fixture and a couple of odds and ends and she will have a new kitchen :)

Monday I made turkey meatloaf with a wedge salad on the side with homemade blue cheese dressing made with Caver Blue cheese.  Tuesday was a roasted chicken with a mozzarella and Kumato (http://www.kumato.com/en/Kumato.aspx)  tomato stack with balsamic and olive oil on the side.  Wednesday was brined pork chops with sauteed mushrooms, garlic and oil; and snow peas and sugar snap peas sauteed with soy, olive oil, rice vinegar, scallions, ginger and wasabi.  Thursday was turkey sloppy Joe's (homemade-ground turkey, mustard, ketchup, garlic, onion, salt, pepper and a little tomato sauce) over rolls with sauteed string beans.  Tonight will be macaroni with marinara and a side of sauteed escarole.

Saturday night we are going to Fat Goose in Williamsburg with Joe and Denise.  Review to follow.

Have a good weekend.

Amore!

I cannot believe I almost forgot to talk about Amore Pizza on Stratton Street in the Pathmark Shopping Center in Flushing.

It is the best pizza in Queens.  Sorry Dani's - we love you to no end, but Amore's taste is more to my liking.  Dani's pizza slices are really large and good, but there is a sweetness to them that is not my favorite.  Amore, on the other hand, has smaller slices, but they taste just like pizza did when I was a kid.  It's amazing how a certain taste can bring back the warmth of your youth (and there wasn't much of that in my youth, so I am glad I found Amore).

We've been several times, but as it's not in our neighborhood nor on our radar, we don't frequent it that often.  Yesterday Michael and I shared 3 slices and I took an eggplant parm hero home for dinner.  The hero was average, but the pizza is amazing.  I hope I remember it next time I am nearby.

Press 195 and Cedar Creek

Press 195 has been a long time favorite of ours even though we do not visit that often.  (http://www.press195.com/index.php).  We are not in Bayside that often but really wish that a Press 195 would open in Forest Hills.  Then we would be there all the time.  The sandwiches are amazing.  Never had a bad one, and with so many to choose from you can go back again and again to keep eating!  Cucumber salad is great.  Beers on tap are great.  Bartenders are really nice, quick and they pay attention to their customers, unlike the host who took our name then gave away empty tables to others who came in after us.  Not such a  big deal, we were happy at the bar with an order of  Belgian fries (OMG) so good, but I'm just saying.  We had:  Belgian fries with chipotle jalapeno mayo; a #20-roast beef, marinara, fresh mozzarella and roasted garlic spread; and a #30-turkey, bacon, Monterey Jack, tomato, chipotle mayo and guacamole.  WOW!

Saturday night we went to a new place Cedar Creek (www.cedaarcreekli.com) on Cedar Swamp Road in Glen Cove.  I discovered it on OpenTable.com and it was a success.  The menu is varied and American (when was the last time you went out for American food?)

We had:  Buffalo chicken spring roll-Vermont cheddar, scallions, bleu cheese and Frank's hot sauce; Mediterranean plate-hummus, tzatsiki, Kalamata olives, charred feta and crispy flat bread; Salt & Pepper calamari-grilled pineapple, shishito peppers and sweet chili sauce; French onion soup and Lobster bisque.

Then:  Chop-chop salad-chick peas, roasted peppers, olives, cucumbers, tomato, feta, onion and red wine vinaigrette; Loaded baby iceberg wedge-applewood smoked bacon, grape tomatoes, shaved red onion with Maytag blue cheese dressing; North Fork green salad-cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, carrots with shallot mustard vinaigrette; and Caesar salad with parmigiano-reggiano and croutons.

Then:  Pan seared organic Scottish salmon-shallot roasted cauliflower, sultana golden raisins, toasted almonds, crispy carrots, chive oil; a chicken special which was devoured but I can't remember what it was and a pasta special with angiolotti stuffed with cheese in a cream sauce with peas, onions and bacon.

Dessert was:  Warm apple crisp in it's own baking dish with Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, rolled oats and vanilla bean ice cream; Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and dark chocolate sauce and Dark chocolate Oreo mousse with fresh whipped cream.  A few glasses of white, a bottle of red, a few cocktails and decaf cappuccinos and espresso and HOLY CRAP we were stuffed.

The food was all very good.  We all agreed that it was one of the best all around meals we've had in a restaurant in a long time. The service, however, is rushed.  I don't believe they intended to rush us, but appetizers and salads and soups came one on top of the other.  Crowded and uncomfortable.  Plates being removed while others are still eating. Maybe they just need to advise their staff of proper etiquette.

It was a great night with Glenn, Eileen and Grandpa Bruce.  We will have to bring friends back to try it again.

Bamboo Ya, El Quijote and Brouwerij Lane

How's that for eclectic varied ethnic eating and drinking?

Friday night Barbara and I took Jennie out for her "29th" birthday.  We went to a new Japanese restaurant on Queens Boulevard called Bamboo Ya.  They have a cool bar area, four tatami tables (take off your shoes and climb in) and regular tables in the back.  Hot sake all around...then vegetable gyoza, cajun salmon carpaccio (seared in chipotle spice rub, sliced thin with wasabi mayo on a bed of greens), roast duck nachos (roasted duck meat on crispy wonton skins with wasabi creme fraiche), garden salad, sexy salmon roll (spicy salmon and cucumber with crunchies on the inside and fresh salmon and mango on the outside topped with spicy mayo, sweet wasabi and eel sauce), chicken teriyaki and hamachi kama (grilled yellowtail collar).  Everything was really good.  Service was consistent, water glasses filled, sake replenished and the company was great! Thanks ladies!

Saturday night, Michael and I went to El Quijote on 23rd Street.  Of course we started with a small pitcher of red sangria at the bar, then we moved to our table (a booth up front-my favorite) and had garlic soup (holy crap-it's fabulous) and salad (with their blue cheese and vinaigrette dressings). Michael had arroz con pollo and I had a 1 1/4 pound broiled lobster.  String beans and broccoli and we were stuffed.  Such a favorite place of ours and never a disappointment.

Michael was looking for coffee stout and so after dinner we drove to Greenpoint to Brouwerij Lane (probably pronounced like brewery).  It's a small slightly hipster (sorry) joint which specializes in beer.  On tap and by the bottle.  Very cool, very beery.

Sunday we ate take out tex-mex.

This week is another week of Wisners :)  We are having:  turkey lasagna with string beans and garlic bread; arroz con pollo with chorizo and peas (planned before Saturday) with mesclun salad; rigatoni marinara with broccoli and Greek salad; balsamic chicken breasts roasted with peppers and olives with a side of spinach.  I also made brownies for tonight, just for Brett :)

Full Plate

That's what we've been having lately.  Last week we went to Teddy's in Wiliamsburg with Jill and Lenny.  They were taking us out to dinner as a thank you for cooking meals for them the previous week.  Teddy's is a bar/restaurant on North 8th and Berry.  The sign outside does not say Teddy's, but we still know it's there.  We had:  Tomato soup and grilled cheese; goat cheese and beet salad; fried oysters; shrimp cabana (with jalapenos and bacon); a chicken burger and a regular burger and spinach quesadillas.  Add in a few beers and a few cocktails and a few glasses of wine and we had a really good time.  Afterward, we checked out the bar at a new place called Masten Lake .  Michael found the place on line and the name was reminiscent of where he spent summers as a child.  The bar is nice, they have strange and interesting cocktails.  The menu is a bit eclectic but we decided we would come back and have dinner there one night. However, after checking on line for their menu and website I just discovered that they closed.  They had only been open for seven months.  Sorry to see them go.

We were also at Dani's recently.  A long time favorite of ours.  We had:  Garden salad, truly the best stracciatella soup anywhere, eggplant parm and chicken with broccoli, peppers and onions in marinara.  Yum!

This past week the Wisners have once again joined us for dinner.  Their kitchen is not finished yet.  I made:  Baked shrimp scampi, orzo and spinach; Rack of pork chops, roasted potatoes and broccoli; chicken cutlets and asparagus with an appetizer of mini steamed pork buns from Chinatown.  Tonight is a staple:  Turkey burgers and Greek salad.

Tomorrow night Barb and I are taking Jennie out for her birthday and we have no other plans for the weekend, but I am sure eating will be involved :)

For the Wisners

Jill, Lenny and Brett are in the process of construction.  They are renovating their kitchen and one of their bathrooms.  Needless to say, their apartment is in quite a state. So they have been eating dinner here for the past week:  Roasted BBQ chicken with rice and mixed greens; Meatballs and sauce, rigatoni, broccoli and garlic bread and last night was soy-scallion-honey broiled skirt steak with corn on the cob and Greek salad.

Tonight they are taking us out to dinner at Teddy's in Williamsburg.  Next week they'll be back at our house again:  Chicken cutlets, shrimp something, turkey burgers and rack of pork chops.

Very neighborly, very good friends!

So Very Worthwhile

Please visit this site http://www.alznyc.org/singforthehope/ and pass it on to all you know.

It is so very worthwhile!

Liz Queler was a counselor of mine from Camp Towanda back in the seventies.  She was always a warm and wonderful person with an amazing talent and she obviously still is.

Thanks.

Post Valentine's Day

Yesterday Michael I met Joe, Denise, Joe, Penny, Tom and Monica at the Kew Gardens Theatre to see A Separation.  It is an Iranian film subtitled in English about a family who tries to cope with their situation. I don't want to give anything away by saying more, but the movie is supposed to win best foreign film and I have to say that I liked it a lot and it gave me more food for thought than any movie I've seen in years.

Afterward, we all walked to Mood (http://moodnyc.com) for dinner.  We shared:  Chilean Sea Bass Ceviche with mango, chili, red onion and chorizo oil; Escargot Risotto with pickled mushrooms, grilled red onions, arugula, garlic herb butter; Fried Calamari with sugar snap peas, red bell pepper, ginger, lime and chili; Grilled Shrimp  with avocado, bacon, fried chic peas, chipotle cocktail sauce; Black bean soup and Buffalo Mozzarella with vine-ripened tomato, grilled prosciutto, basil, balsamic reduction, extra virgin olive oil.  All were very good (except I did not try the risotto).

Dinner was:  Skillet Roasted Herb Chicken with gouda gratin, broccoli rabe, pinot noir sauce; Pan Roasted Duck Breast with green onion fried rice, bok choy, Korean BBQ sauce; Pan Roasted Salmon with asparagus & crab risotto, sauté of spinach & watercress, warm almond milk; Pan Roasted Sea Scallops with cauliflower & white bean puree, haricot vert, pancetta vinaigrette; Goat Cheese Ravioli with carpaccio of beets, grilled prosciutto, watercress, beet vinaigrette and Orrechiette with sausage, broccoli rabe, cannellini beans, sundried tomatoes & garlic.  Again all was good.

We've not been here since they opened and I admit I didn't have any interest in going back, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was.  The service is adequate, nothing to complain about but the wine list is lacking.  I know they are in the process of re-doing it, but when we asked what reds they had, the server answered "Cabernet, Merlot, Pinor Noir and a Yellow Tail Shiraz."  Some list huh ?! Anyway, we had two bottles of cabernet and they were fine.

Too stuffed for coffee and dessert we all went home.  Happy Valentine's Day and thanks for the company!!

At the Shapiros

Last night Michael and I went to Steve and Lori's.  We brought wine (as usual) and an apple pie from ButterCooky (http://www.buttercookybakery.com/Buttercooky_Bakery_Home.html).

When we arrived there were all sorts of goodies on the counter:  roasted peppers, olives, parmigiano-reggiano and balsamic creme and most importantly--fresh mozzarella that Steve makes himself.  Amazing!  We hung out with the girls and heard all about new plays that they will be performing in, as well as their past accomplishments.  Steve was busy trying new recipes from his birthday cookbook from the American Test Kitchen.  He made:  mushroom and leek risotto and rosemary foccaccia-both were absolutely great.  He also made braised beef short ribs with onions and carrots.  And don't forget the homemade vanilla ice cream that Lori made!! We were full and happy when we drove home.  Thanks!!

Dinosaur BBQ

Last night I went to Dinosaur BBQ uptown with Barbara, her daughter Jackie, her niece Katie and Katie's partner Anna.  The scent of the place outside is more than enough to draw you inside.  The smell inside is enough to make you want to stay forever.  Wood bar, floor, tables, chairs and walls with old movie posters and tin signs.  A great selection of beers and of course there's the BBQ!

We had:  An order of fried green tomatoes which are yummy, however, an order of 5 slices of tomatoes costs $8.95.  Truly unconscionable.  We also had:  Pulled pork sandwich; blackened catfish; bbq ribs; pulled pork over portobello mushroom cap and collard greens, corn bread, mac and cheese; whipped sweet potatoes and chocolate ice box cake for dessert.  I brought home an order of garlic chipotle wings for Michael.  Good late night snack :)

Always exactly what you expect, decent service and street parking.  Along with great company, what more could you want?

Wednesday

Saturday night we went to Glenn and Eileen's for pizza (from Emilio's).  It's GREAT! And Sunday we spent at Leslie's for the Super Bowl...3 foot hero, chili with rice and fixin's, crudite, dip, guacamole dip, bean and corn salad, olives, cheese, roasted peppers, hot dogs with sauerkraut, chicken wings (many assortments-all homemade).  And of course, NY won so that was good, even if it wasn't the Jets.

Monday night I made the best meatballs I have ever made.  Now truthfully, I don't make good meatballs so it is relative.  But here's what I did:  1/2 pound of ground dark meat turkey, 1/2 pound of ground sweet Italian pork sausage, 1/4 onion chopped, 4 garlic cloves chopped, 1/4 cup parsley chopped, 1 egg, 1/2 cup of bread crumbs soaked in milk, a few tablespoons grated parmigiana, salt and pepper.  I made meatballs, put them on a rack over a cookie sheet and baked them in the oven for 40 minutes or so.  Then I added them to the sauce I was already making on the stove (2 cans crushed tomatoes, 1/2 onion chopped, 4 garlic cloves chopped, 1/4 cup parsley chopped, oregano, salt and pepper, red wine).  That cooked for a few hours and the sauce was great and the meatballs were great.  Good taste and texture.  Michael came home from work the following day saying he was thinking about having a meatball all day :)

Last night was arroz con pollo, but the brown jasmine rice would not soak up the liquid, so I added more and more (broth) until the rice became al dente.  The taste was great, just a bit crunchy :)

I am glad Michael is my food tester.
